re: 5-6000 miles with no oil cap? Dipstick gritty, how worried should I be?

Why are you and your son driving so much every month?

I’d maybe do an oil change, run it for a few days then do another change

Is the oil cap on the valve cover or does it open to the sump? If it opens to the sump, you are probably going to be OK because all the dirt would have been picked up by the filter most likely.
If the oil cap opens into the valve cover, you might have some issues.

I had it happen after an oil change at the dealership. Got a couple blocks away and smoke started coming from under the hood. Opened the hood, and oil everywhere and the cap still sitting on the block. They towed it back, cleaned the engine compartment, changed out the oil again, and gave me 3 free oil changes.

That dude probably parlayed his experience at Jiffy Lube into a job changing oil at your dealership.

I assume this is into the valve cover?

Trade it in and let someone else deal with it

throw a little saw dust in there to thicken the remaining oil, it’ll be fine...

Take an oil sample to your local co-op. They can send it off to test for metal shards and let you know if you should be worried.

The only correct answer is travel ball?

Since you have noticed no issue in the past couple thousand miles since replacing the cap you have nothing to worry about.

Sounds like your son pissed some baw off and he dropped the oil cap when he almost got caught pouring sand in son's (your) engine. Get an oil analysis and see where you at. Lubriport in NOLA is a good source. If you have to rebuild don't let anyone know so the baw doesn't get satisfaction for the blasting sand he stole from the rig. Also hang the biggest set of truck nuts you can find when done

Sounds pretty frickin’ stupid to me. So what you’re saying is you now have paid twice for an oil change plus all the wasted time. Why didn’t you just change the oil yourself from the get-go? That way you know it’s been done right and you didn’t waste the time and money like a frickin’ moron would.
