If you are in the BR area, the parade of home will continue this coming weekend. i believe they are charging this year for the first time but it’s only like $10/adult and the money is donated. You can go check out a bunch of newly built house, take pics and get idea. I’d suggest go and pay attention to things like pantries, closets, cabinets, etc. my current pantry layout is based on a house I saw two years ago in the parade of homes. I also go a lot of cabinets ideas as well. My wife can’t visualize things from plans so needed to walk in the houses and see things first hand.

As it has already been said. I'm +1 for Ethernet throughout the house. If I had to do it again..I'd have 2 jacks for the TV (TV/DirecTV and PS4).
If you can...look at other houses the way yours is (if available) and see how the lighting is. May need can lights in darker areas.
I'll never own another home without under cabinet lights. That is awesome. Have a big enough pantry for food storage. Ours is under our staircase I had honestly thought...no way we'll ever fill that up. I was wrong.
You on natural gas? Have it plumbed to the back porch as well if possible for potential NG generator or just a NG grill.
If you have kids that need night lights...consider putting in the outlets that have the built in LED lighting. That frees up a plug. I installed mine in the bathroom.

We went to parade of homes last weekend. Great experience, although I think my wife got a lot of expensive ideas....

Yes we will have NG and have an outdoor grill running on NG. I will make sure they put a hook up were we would potentially install a whole house generator.

Northshore Parade of homes is coming up in May and NOLA is first two weeks of June. Plenty of homes for ideas. Do you have plans and a builder?

Set up a ubiquiti unifi system for wifi. Plan for indoor and outdoor access points.

take pictures of every square inch of your house before they Sheetrock, ceilings and walls. Save it somewhere and you will go back to these pictures multiple times over the years. Good luck

Make sure you're looking over the fine details. One of the things that I have went through so far is the small details. Like make the entryway casing match the top of my window casing. It wasn't until the house was framed and sheet rocked until we noticed we wanted it to be even. I had to pay for the framers to make a trip...Another example, on the plans, gas lanterns on the front door and electrical ones over the garage. I'm glad my contractor did the bid for all gas lanterns otherwise, it would have been an additional cost.

Make sure in the attic spaces where you can get to have the framer put down 7/16 osb for storage.

A foot rinse faucet by the back door. We took our current one and had it just moved a few feet over and down. We use it all the time...and yes we are outside with bare feet quite often.

Others I would do if I built a new house:
—Breaker box that’s easy to access
—double the amount of zones for sprinklers
—taller garage door
—appliance outlet in garage for drinks fridge
—iron balusters on stair bannister
—more recessed lighting
