Ship booking always costs you more. Only advantage I am aware of is that the ship won't leave you if your return is delayed using one booked by the ship. On all our cruises I have never seen a tour delayed leaving someone stranded but I have seen people running down the dock after the ship finally is released from the dock after waiting 20 minutes and usually those late were over served at whatever bar they were in.

Correct. If you book independently they'll leave without you and you'll have to find your own way to get back to the ship in the next port
