The tournament as a concept isn't really about figuring out who the best team is anyways so that's why no one is hung up on stuff like this.

Tournaments are really a terrible way to find out who the best is. I say this only because any team can have a bad night or any team can have a hot streak or good night. The ideal way to pick a champion is to have everyone play and pick the team with the best record. Determine ties through either tie breakers or direct play. The total number of teams prohibits that so you get what you had when this first started.

The tournament grew in direct proportion to the revenue from the tournament growing. It’s now money driven almost as much as, if not as much as or more than, competition driven.

I liked it best when there were 65 teams with 1 Open Round game. Usually had a SWAC school in it.

Gave you one game on Tuesday night and that’s it. Just a taste of the MADNESSSSSSSS.

Apparently new conferences were forming and each conference is guaranteed 1 bid and they didn't want to take away any at-large bids to make room for them.

Because God knows what a crime it would be if all the 19-17 ACC bubble teams didn't make the tournament.

They should rank them 1-68. And have 61 play 68, 62 play 67 and so on for the 4 play in games. Then proceed as normal. 11 or 12 seeds should be in play in games.

Yeah, I felt they should keep it at 64 and nix the .500 teams in the power conferences. But, I think I've read there was some kind of deal in place to prevent that or maybe the big boys just have too much political power to allow it.

I think it's crap to make auto qualifiers do a play-in. They earned their right to play the tournament in earnest.

The tournament has morphed into this bizarre gigantic participation trophy that everyone felt entitled to. It's in theory supposed to be the playoffs, a tournament to crown a national champion and we gotta somehow discuss why a team what went .500 and finished 9th in their conference is somehow worthy of inclusion.

I mean, there are like 30'ish at large spots, they are trivially easy to get if you're a good team having a solid year, the only teams that deserve to be in the playoffs.

yeah it's not the tournament until noon on Thursday afternoon, and every automatic bid should be guaranteed a spot there.

They should get rid of it entirely

I like the play in games, and I bet the teams like them too.

Belmont won an NCAA tournament game last night. They likely never would've had that opportunity under the regular format.

The reason they have the play in games is because of additional conferences being added, like when the Big East and the AAC split. They didn't want to decrease the amount of at-large bids, but they had to add automatic bids. This was the solution.

I don’t understand why the first four isn’t the 16 seeds. Why are teams at the 11 seed playing to get in?

The 11 seeds are the last at large teams in the dance. If Belmont won their conference tourney, they would have avoided playing last night.

I think it’s unfair to have conference champs out of the SWAC and some other small conferences always end up in Dayton. They won their conference, let them have their shot at a 1 seed.

Absolutely. If you aren't on the bracket pool sheet, you weren't in the tournament.

I have no philosophical objection to forcing the last few at large teams to play their way in, but automatic qualifiers should be guaranteed a seed.

BTW, this all started when the Mountain West split from the WAC. NCAA didn't want to reduce the number of at large bids, b/c OMG we can't risk losing the 7th team from the big whatever. So, they shamefully decided to kick a 16 seed out a day before the party starts.

They should call it the Opening Round.

So that then we can have an opening round AND a first round, as in two separate things. And you are calling the old format retarded?
