Not only did these two combine to throw 12 innings of shut down pitching, they got the win, and possibly saved the weekend for us.

We are down pitchers, and if you would have said before this game that we went 12, I would have guessed we went through 5-6 pitchers. We only burned 2, and are now set up nicely to hopefully win the series.

Fontenot was amazing!!!

Hess had his best game. And he sure as hell needed it.

No doubt. I always figured Fontenot would he that absolute shut down set up guy for us this year, but this was when I thought our pitching staff would have 5-6 starters. He has earned himself an opportunity to see if he can extend consistently and put up a similar effort. If he can, and we need a starting role filled, make him a candidate.

After the shaky first inning Hess bowed up and Fontenot shut em down.

After the shaky first

The shaky first inning huh? He gave up 1 run in that first inning. It wasn't shaky. Did he work himself into a jam? Yep. But did you know that good pitchers get in jams sometimes? You know what the good ones do? They get themselves out of it. That is exactly what Hess did. He deserves as much credit for the first inning as he does for the next 6.

Lol, Hess secured his job as a starter last night and you and every other hater that wanted him out of the lineup if trying to spin it. Hess looked great. His last two pitches were 94 and 95 miles an hour, after 110 plus pitches. That is the kind of arm that you need starting, not throwing 25 pitches a weekend. If he can continue to focus on command and his out pitch he will fine.
What we have seen is that Fontenot might be more than a long relief/set up guy. He through 50+ pitches and through the ball really well as he did last week. He has starter stuff. That is great to have in the bullpen but I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the weekends if others struggle.

Game 1 was nerve racking. We had chances with RISP so many times and came up short. Both Hess and Fontenot were great to watch. I've always liked Fontenot, glad to see him put together 6 innings of shutout ball.

Dude, it takes nothing away from his overall performance, but giving up a run 100% qualifies as a shaky inning. Letting a couple guys on base is a shaky inning. Giving up a run is even more shaky. That doesn't translate to saying the whole outing was shaky.

And, given his reputation, that first inning was reason for concern. He almost always gives up runs in the first, and then goes on to not have a very good outing. This time he stepped up, and good for him. He was excellent.

If Hal Hughes could catch he wouldn’t have given up any runs

He gave up two hits and two walks (one intentional) in the first. That's not a good inning, regardless of who should have caught what. Stuff happens. Pitch around it, instead of making it worse.

But, again, he clearly rebounded after that inning.

CPM told them we were short handed and they needed to go the deep in the games and they did.

Having a little sense of urgency focused this team which paid off. A good sign.

Yet, this was a tread started at 2:16, halfway into the first inning.
