I hate when people have debates like this and we are just supposed to totally ignore money. Williamson is going to make less than 50M over the next 4 years. Giannis is going to make more than double that. It matters and its strange we are just supposed to ignore that..

I hate when people assume contracts would stay the same if it was a hypothetical draft of all the players in the NBA.

My name is Luca

I live on the second floor

I live upstairs from you

Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night

Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight

Just don't ask me what it was

Just don't ask me what it was

Just don't ask me....what it was

Zion would be the #1 pick in a re-draft of all basketball players.

Giannis 2
Harden 3

Giannis would be the clear #1.

Meh, potential is being massively overrated here. If you offer me a top 50 type all timer vs. a kid who still hasn't played in the NBA yet, I'll take the all timer.

It has to be per the CBA. You can't just ignore years of service. Williamson is an insane bargain for 4 years and Giannis is up the super max in two years for around 50M per. How can you just overlook that?

If an expansion team was created, they'd have no shot at Giannis anyways because he'd be protected.

You saying you wouldn't be tempted? Potentially 15 years of excellence? Now, he could break down any day, but so couldn't anyone?

Or you could get Giannis and know you are getting at least 10 years of excellence instead of potentially 15

To answer your question no I would not be tempted

Maybe. but top 5 all time potential might be worth more than a top 50 lock.

If we're taking ALL factors into account Zion probably gets picked around 5-10.

GMs aren't thinking about 15 years down the road because how many players are on the same team that they're drafted on in 15 years?

GMs are short sighted and will want to win now and keep their jobs.

Once you get past the top superstars then I can see someone taking Zion but there aren't many GMs who would take him top 5 if I had to guess.

Nah. Zion can shoot.

There is an interesting question buried under all the crap in the thread.

The head to head pick is a no-doubt Zion.

If you have a team, and want to win, the no doubt second question is Giannis over Zion.

However, if you have a brand new team formed through one draft and an expansion draft, you have to seriously consider Zion over Giannis.

Why?

You don't want to be mediocre too fast. Zion will generate healthy fan interest, while you are sorting through a lineup of rejects. Giannis makes you instantly almost credible as a non upper end of the lottery team. If I want to win championships, I'm more comfortable spending the years of Zion's rookie deal sorting through the garbage and finding 5 rotation type players, while harvesting a couple more high to decent lottery picks.

YMMV, but I really think starting at the bottom is better than starting at the middle, for the long term, in the NBA
