I took it to be an image of an elderly WWII vet, a ninety-year old. We've yet to see Vietnam vets receive the same homage as the WWII vets and given the renewed interest in WWII since 1998 because of Brokaw and Hanks it seems likely to be a vet of WWII.

Correct. My unit went over as part of the buildup in early 1965. Going over we had M-14s; we were issued M-15s after about a month in country.
