It is a great image, but, is that shadow correct for a WWII soldier or Marine? Is that the shadow of an M1 Garand? Doesn't seem to be.

Correct. My unit went over as part of the buildup in early 1965. Going over we had M-14s; we were issued M-15s after about a month in country.
