I’m talking about outside of the vet recommended/obvious. I have a 17 year old lab, he has trouble getting up after laying down. He can’t hold in his pee/crap very well anymore and I’m afraid he’s in more pain than I realize. Tried giving him meds the vet gave us but they don’t seem to be working. How do you decide when the time comes?

Also, sorry to hear about your pup chinhoyang, im torn up at the idea of putting him down, but I know he’s lived a good life and got to do what he loves for most of it.

Unfortunately, if you have to ask this question it’s time

When it hurts you to see them go about their day.

We cooked up a steak as a last meal for ours when we were making the decision. He barely even cared and had trouble eating it. We knew then.

Sorry but it sounds like it’s time. It’s hard to do. I waited too long years ago and I regretted not having the courage to end her suffering.

God bless you and your dog

When you make this decision, as hard as it is, make sure you are there when it happens. Don't let your pup spend their last minutes wondering where the person/people it loves the most are while it is in an uncomfortable, strange place.

I have a dog that's not quite as old but still elderly. He has seizures, trouble walking and control issues at times and I'm ready to put him down. But then he'll show a miraculous recovery and be pretty mobile and I just can't do it.

Almost identical to his situation. He will perk up for a few days but unfortunately he hasn’t come back in the last couple months.

Not too far past that cute puppy phase really. A full grown golden doodle isn't near as photogenic as the little fluffy version.

Yep, agreed. I have a 12 yr old golden that her hips are starting to break down. Unfortunately I’ll have to make this decision in the next year or two probably.

It sounds like it’s time man. I struggled mitghily with this decision last month. Had to put my 12 year old lab down and it was the hardest fricking thing. Her cancer had come back and she was struggling. Wasn’t eating, diarrhea, couldn’t hold her urine. She was struggling really hard to get up and down. She had no life left in her.

In the end, she finally looked me in my eyes and i just knew what she was telling me. She let me know she was ready and i couldn’t be selfish any longer. It still stings but i know i did the right thing looking back even though at the time i was really hurting and trying to find reasons to second guess the decision.

17 years is a long life. I recently had to put my kitty to sleep at the age of 17. If he is really having problems getting up, he is miserable. You have to think of quality of life. He is ready to go. Putting your beloved pet to sleep is hard but he is suffering. Do the right thing. God bless you and your beloved pup.

Just remember, you will see him again. God loves all of his creatures.

Just remember not to make it about your well-being, but your pet's.

One of the hardest things I ever did- I was depressed for a solid week- but my dog's suffering had ended.

She was in a better place.

Good luck.

I did extensive amounts of research because I was so scared of letting her suffer and not being able to make the decision in time for her to go peacefully. Of all the things I read and watched, this video helped me the most. Please give it a watch and talk to your vet. I talked to my vet about it a good bit up until the end and I have to say she was nothing short of amazing. I had never had to do it before and I had so many questions. Just do what you feel is right by your pup, he has had a great life I am sure

I cried for 4 days. Asked the Lord to let me know she was with him and ok. My prayer was answered. My kitty was with him. It was such a hard time for me. First pet I had ever lost.

Thanks for the kind words, and it sounds like it is time.

It is what you have to do as a pet owner, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a gut wrenching decision.

maybe one last bit of advice - dont schedule it out too far in advance. Give yourself time to be with him to really feel like you have said goodbye and then go.

I talked to my vet on Monday morning after I had to take Sadie to an emergency vet for the diarhhea. She saw the chart and called me and really felt the time had come and I agreed. We scheduled it for Friday. That whole fricking week I felt like I was heading towards my own death. I loved spending good time with her but knowing what was coming, what I felt like I was doing to her rather than for her, was horrible.

We were set up for 5pm on the Friday. I cried like a fricking child that whole day. The clock was an enemy and I couldn't do anything to stop it. It was so tough man.

If you can be strong and schedule it somewhat quickly, maybe consider it. I wouldn't wish what I went through that week on anyone.

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.
Buy a pup and your money will buy
Love unflinching that cannot lie
Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find - it's your own affair, -
But ... you've given your heart to a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!),
When the spirit that answered your every mood
Is gone - wherever it goes - for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart to a dog to tear!

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent,
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve;
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long -
So why in - Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?
