it is so true. I know I did the right thing at the time looking back but at the time, I felt like the worst person knowing what I had to do.
sorry about your pup chino, hoping for healing for you and yours
sorry for the long post folks, guess I needed to let out a little more than I thought

Sounds like its time man. 17 for a lab is an exceedingly long life. My family had to put down our 12 year old lab last year when he developed cancer and lost interest in eating.
Your dog can't tell you hes miserable but if he can't get up, he can't control his bowels, what quality of life is left for him? He can't do the things a dog loves anymore. Like I said he can't tell you how much pain hes in and I imagine you don't have endless resources for human like end of care to keep him comfortable until he passes naturally. So its up to you to decide for him when he's had enough.

Sorry to hear this. I dread the day when I have to be deciding this for my dogs. Maybe there's some comfort in this.

Is he still in good spirits? That's the most important thing. You can get underpads and give him aspirin or Ace (as long as it isn't contraindicated).
If there are no positive signs (happy when you come home, still likes treats, etc) it's time.

If you make the decision to put him to sleep, the guilt will consume you. I still feel guilty today. But you will do the right thing. Give him all the love and extra attention that you can and afterwards (it will take a long time), you will overcome the guilt and know that you did the right thing in the eyes of God. I feel for you. And I am praying for you, your family and your pup. Don't worry, you will see him again. God will make sure of that.

I have an elderly BC (14) but he is still in good health and barely looks like he is 7 or 8, only a few grey hairs. I know the time will come when he will pass or I will have to make that decision for his own benefit, and that thought is giving me a gigantic lump in my throat.
If the Rainbow Bridge isn't real, I don't know what I'll do. I love dogs too much.

I'm glad to hear it. It may sound silly, but it brought me some comfort and helped me through the process and I hope it does the same for you. All my best man

When you find them in a slightly good moment during their sickness and still cry because you know it's not much longer.

Kitties have never been my thing, but I wish that anyone who shares their love with them will get the same relief and connection when the time comes.

It's hard and my mistake was not doing it soon enough. If it's there and you're already questioning when is when, it's time.
The last day of my dog's life he was so lethargic he couldn't stand to drink water on his own power. I regret not doing it a week earlier when he started struggling with his bowels thinking it was just a virus at worst.

When I had to put my kitty to sleep and had him cremated, my vet gave me this when I got his ashes and it will help you in your time of sorrow:
From your furry loved one:
"I know that it must be different,
now that I am no longer there,
I realize how much I was loved,
And how much you really cared.
I know it will be hard at first,
when you look around for me,
Expecting to find me in my bed,
Or beside my favorite tree.
Someday you will begin to see,
Although it will take some time,
The memories are yours and mine.
I'll remember you my friend,
Just how much you meant to me,
So please don't grieve and don't be sad
It was just my time to leave.
We'll see each other, there's no doubt,
When there will be no sadness and no grief,
For now I am running and playing,
With happiness and peace.

I too hope the bridge is real. I've had some good dogs and cats.
When the vet told me about the little boy at the clinic holding Piper's head and telling her "it will be ok" as he sedated her, I didn't keep my composure. Vet said it made him tear up too - he really treated Piper well.
