A Common Sense Approach to Dealing with the College Debt Crisis

I challenge you to keep an open mind and watch this presentation from SXSW. Free college is not the answer. We need to increase vocational training. We need to control the increase in college cost by decreasing the administrator to student ratio in order to improve cost efficiency.

Result of virtually free money.
Dry up the money, solve the problem.
However, my guess is administrators will cut professors before they close the diversity office.

Wasn't going to, BUT you are a hero to those who might have, Jake.

Stop lending people money to go to college (to get worthless degrees). Problem solved.

If the gubmint were to get completely out of the college game, and I mean COMPLETELY (no pell grants, loans, or any kind of support to the college in any form) you would see the price of college crater overnight.
Hell, even before Trump, there were 5 million openings in the trades. Try getting a roofer or carpenter these days. They'll get to you when they get to you. Every single guy/gal I know that owns one of these is making hand over fist if they are even a little bit competent. If they are good? Lord.
Read what Mike Rowe has posted. Dude has it cold. Too bad no one will listen to him. College has its place but if you cant do an NPV on what it will cost you vs what you are looking to get degree wise and job wise then you have zero business setting foot on a quad.

Yep if you need a loan for college it should be forced to be for some career that can actually pay it back

Your shtick on here is atrocious. You were a Hillary shill, then a Rubio shill, and now a Yang shill

Or better yet, Universities shouldnt be charging the same tuition for a musical theory degree as they do for a chemical engineering degree. Tuition should be based on potential earned income of said degree. Problem solved.

Did the OP go from being a paid shill for Marco to being a paid shill for Yang?

Okay so what you are saying is you have no substantive argument to counter his proposal that we need to incentivize vocational training...

My common sense solution to the college debt crisis is to advise the snowflakes not to borrow money you aren't willing to pay back.
This is really elementary economic knowledge and the country should be embarrassed that so many people don't know better

Would a common sense approach be:
1) think of college like an investment and the majority of classes should maximize that investment. Think STEM degrees
2) get a job while in college. Take classes in the summer and try to graduate in 3 years.
3) don’t get any facial tattoos or piercings or those strange ear lobe things that look retarded.
4) remove the red dye from your hair prior to any job interviews. Also don’t do any drugs 3 months prior to job interview.
5) take seminars on how to interview at a job. Don’t tell the interviewer that his company has a large carbon footprint and that you alone know how to run the company.
6) after being hired, live frugally. Establish good credit. Pay bills on time.
7) negotiate a good interest rate on your student debt.
8) pay it off.
Common sense like that?

Or, loans can only be used for tuition.

Exactly, same problem we have with public schools now.

I'm not responsible for buying my neighbor's child a car. I'm not responsible for buying my neighbor's kid a house. Why should I be responsible for buying my neighbor's kid an education? It's as simple as that.

Or the government gets out of the loan business and we let them be privately underwritten

That’s wholly not possible due to the fact a private insurer would not loan that amount of money to someone with virtually no credit such as a college student. Or they would loan them the money but at an astronomically high APR.

Maybe they are on to something.
