You go stand on first base and hesitate on what you see late and the ball is not as far away from catcher as you think. Like I said could have been anyone on the team.

If you hesitate, you don’t go. It’s that simple.
Guys with speed see a ball in the dirt and take off. You don’t dilly dally around.

I agree with you on that. It’s a read. I’m just saying for someone like Hughes he needs to be the best on the team at that. His bat isn’t the strongest so he needs to be elite at the small things on offense. Bunting, sac bunting, reading the pass balls will all earn his spot in the line up. If he’s a liability at those as well then the trade off for defense just doesn’t make sense anymore. I like him and had hope he would develop into a Nola like SS. So far he hasn’t.
