It is the largest bird in North America and has been around 1000s of years until the direct results of man nearly made them extinct. The Rockport Tx area has millions of dollars of ecotourism tied to their come back, there are a few reasons.

Who's shooting cranes of any type? This infuriates me that these keep getting shot.

Sandhill cranes have a pretty healthy population and have seasons for them. They are supposed to be great eating.

I think it's you that needs to explain yourself. Why do they NOT appeal to you? At least enough to keep them from going extinct? I love, and respect nature. I'll kill the hell out of individual animals, as long as I'm going to eat them, and there is a viable population. But, humans are a fricking plague on the earth and many species have gone or are going extinct because of us. And, it's people with your mindset, of "what's that animal even bring to the table, anyway?" that are largely responsible. Nature is a thing as a whole. You don't get to pick and choose which parts you think are best. Sure, other animals can fill the role of the whooping crane. But, who wants nature to get whittled down to just a few different species? Diversity is one of nature's greatest appeals.

They are bad arse, and were on the verge of extinction. Still critically endangered.

The reintroduction program has actually been more successful than I thought it would be. In fact in the last 2 years, for no particular reason, a couple of whooping cranes in our area that have never migrated picked up and went to Canada and came back as they used to many decades ago. This was stunning to the people involved with the program. A huge stride forward that was totally unexpected. Now what if that's the ones that get shot.

For your viewing pleasure...

No matter what is posted someone always has to be opposite. It’s like there love to try and stir up some type of argument. Why can’t we just all agree that it takes a trashy person to intently shoot a endangered bird just for the hell of it. Just because they don’t benefit you directly doesn’t mean they don’t benefit the ecosystem in some way.

Hang the culprit, cut off his head, kill his dog, put bleach in his fish tank, kill all his kin folk. Its a freaking bird that's to stupid to adapt, so what. Millions of dollars spent for nothing

Buffalo, elk, deer, antelope, moose, etc were too stupid to adapt to human hunters so should we have let them go extinct instead of intervening?

Buffalo evolved around predators that would chase them and pick off stragglers. Over hundreds of thousands of years they developed a strategy of huddling up and fighting wolves, lions, etc that were attacking them rather than running and losing young, old etc. Are buffalo stupid because they couldn't adapt their defense strategy (in a couple of decades) to effectively escape hunters with firearms?

They are delicious. Only killed a few but reverse sear the breast like a backstrap and they are incredible.

Not caring if an animal goes extinct just because they can’t eat or hunt them is some hall of fame coonass/redneck shite.
