So my wife is finishing up her Master’s on March 15th, and I’m trying to surprise her with a long weekend for the 2 of us (3 nights, as we have two kids, and that’s as long as I can rig up childcare without telling her about it) as a way of showing my appreciation for all her hard work. My ideal travel dates are the last weekend of March (28th-31st). Travel has to be domestic because her passport is expired and she obviously can’t get it renewed without throwing up red flags, plus not having enough time at this point.

We live in Nashville, and I’m thinking of the following places:
NYC - she’s been before, but I haven’t, and she keeps telling me we need to go together
Vegas - I’ve been plenty of times, but never with her. She has never been. Same as NYC, she says we need to go together soon
Seattle - neither of us has been, both want to go.
San Diego - same as Seattle

I’m leaning towards NYC, but not sure 3 days is really enough to take it in. Does the travel board have an opinion on which destination is best for this trip and then suggestions of things to do while there to maximize the trip?

New York. For a short trip, that’s easily the shortest flight for you to make, and getting a restaurant reservation at somewhere nice would be a great way to celebrate.

NYC for sure. Plenty to do and you won’t waste a ton of time traveling to the west coast.

Seattle was a good long weekend for us in 2009.

Day one Mount Ranier/Ferry ride
Day two Seattle
Day three Olympic peninsula

Not a lot of time to do too much. Don't take it all up by flying all around.

But...

My thoughts...

Nearby?

Blackberry Farm

Grove Park Inn

Flying?

Turks and Caicos. Hands down. Through Charlotte, from here, it wasn't more than 4 or so hours. Very close by for an island.

Does she like surprises?
Would she rather a staycation someplace closer and more relaxing?
NYC offers plenty for a quick weekend, but it won’t be restful (flying, busy city). Figure out what she’d prefer before you get stuck on a grand gesture.

San Diego is amazing. Temecula is nearby with a bunch of nice vineyards.

Another vote for NYC. I did similar for a surprise birthday trip for my wife. Direct flight from MSY to EWR and we were out sight seeing before lunch on Friday morning. We were able to get a lot in in just a few days.
