To preserve the union. I've never said otherwise.
Lincoln was elected to free the slaves. That's why So. Carolina left. The North had had enough of southerners coming into their states and dragging people away. Lincoln was the Abolitionists candidate.

Then why didn’t he abolish slavery in the north? Why didn’t he free the slaves in the north when he gave the emancipation proclamation?
