You are way too cynical. There may be a few mercenaries in congress, but I think 95% of voting patterns remain the same if all lobbying money disappeared tomorrow

Without lobbyists, elected officials wouldn't even know what the fricking party lines are/should be on about 90% of legislation.

We had 60+ Senators just vote for a resolution condemning the President's decision to withdraw troops from Syria. You think they came into politics supporting our boys dying in some shithole? No, they vote for these resolutions because, if they don't, the party establishment will primary them for deviating from one of the basest of orthodoxies: unyielding support for Israel regardless of its impact on our own country.
