Josh Gray absolutely tore up the D/G League and had a cup of coffee in the NBA. It’s certainly not as absurd to project him to be drafted as you make it seem.

Working your way up from a paid open tryout is pretty far from drafted.

Different sites have different projections. Sbnation didn’t have him in the 1st round at all

His offensive skillset reminds me of Al Horford. Al Horford is an all NBA-defensive team caliber defender though and Naz needs a lot of work at that end. But Naz has a lot of offensive tools that are rare to find in a guy his size. Soft touch on his shot (similar style of Horford), he’s shown glimpses of being able to make the occasional post move, which is enough given today’s NBA style of play, and he knows how to use his body to create room for a mid-range shot.

Now obviously he’s struggled at putting it together for full games but as people have hinted, the NBA drafts on skillsets and potential rather than college effectiveness.

He didn’t get drafted because he was dogshit at LSU. NBAdraft.net had him projected to get drafted before he put on an LSU uniform because they saw potential. I’m pretty sure they had removed him from mocks long before he actually entered the draft. There are plenty of second round picks that don’t play an NBA minute. So in effect, they were more accurate than NBA scouts in evaluating him.

So let’s put to bed the “he’s not ready talk.”

NBA drafts on potential. Any weaknesses he has can be improved on in the NBA.

Naz Reid projected No. 28 pick to Golden State

I wish him well in whatever he does. But projections and readiness don't go hand in hand. You just made that point, yourself, by mentioning that the NBA drafts on potential. Most players bust, because they're all "measurables" and nothing else. The fact is, Naz isn't close to being NBA ready. Doesn't rebound, doesn't have good enough footwork, and lacks touch around the basket.

If he'll work on some things, he could be really good. Not sure he's willing to do that.

I corrected the above message to say "don't go hand in hand". Typo.

this is one of the weakest drafts in awhile. So a lot of fringe prospects might enter because of this.

Half of the lottery are freshmen, meaning the other half are sophomores and a junior. Those guys likely weren't lottery picks as freshmen. They took one more year to improve their stock and it paid off. It could pay off for Naz, as well. Saying he enters the draft for sure because nbadraft.net has him at 28 is as silly as saying he needs another year.

I won't fault him for either decision.

And he can spend a lot more time working with quality coaches than he can in college, without having to worry about classes and studying.

What does that have to do with being ready? Look, if the kid actually gets drafted in the first round, he'll leave. And more power to him, if it works out that way. But these projections are always based on pure size and athleticism. If a player actually shows advanced skill, then he's going in the top ten. Most of the draft is less about production, and more about athleticism and size. As such, I don't think any league has a lower success rate among it's first rounders.

I'm looking at Naz, and as much as I want to see him succeed, I just don't see a rounded skill set, nor a willingness to be anything other than what he is. Rebounding is all about effort. With his size, there is simply no reason to be such a below average rebounder. His offensive game is very one dimensional. So, whoever drafts him is going to have a long way to go with him. Hence why I say "not ready".

You make it seem as though I said he won't be drafted in the first round. He might not. But that's not my point.

Personally think Naz's skill set is better suited for the NBA game. I think he looks like a solid contributor on an NBA team. I don't think he's ever going to be a super star but I do think he stays on active rosters for a pretty sizable amount of time.

We knew he was here for a year coming in and I still feel that's whats going on. He has given his all to this team so I respect what he's doing here even if it's not a long college career.
