Looking to get a camera

Looking to get my wife a camera for her bday in March and need some recommendations as I’m as ignorant as it comes with this stuff.
I want to get her something nice (around $500 range but can stretch a little more if it’s worth it).
Also something that won’t be overwhelming to learn at first.
So what do I need to look for??

Look into a Sony mirrorless. They are small and relatively inexpensive.
Pentax makes a small mirrorless one too.
Put either on Auto and you'll get great pictures.

Consider buying a refurbished model directly from the manufacturer. I’m not sure if Nikon does this but I know Canon does. They go over each product by hand and it comes with a warranty. It’s a good way to save some cash.
