California has the world's 5th largest economy. Not sure how people think it is a trainwreck. Too much right-wing propaganda, maybe.

Tie between Louisiana and Mississippi for government, Florida and Mississippi for its people.
And I live in FL. If it were just the coastal areas it would be a totally different story. However, the central areas of the state ruin it for everybody.
There's certain areas in Arkansas I would live before most other areas around the country except on the beach. There's others you couldn't pay me to live there - which is the case for the entire state of MS.

People like to shite on Mississippi but it does have redeeming qualities. Great culture for the arts (poetry, art, literature, ballet, the blues, etc.). Great food. Great hospitality. If you have a decent job that makes decent money, you can live like a king.

California is bleeding middle class residents and replacing them with illegals. It's not a healthy state from a financial standpoint. They'll end up passing medicaid for illegals and stuff like that eventually. If you live in California I'd be expecting to pay much higher taxes in the future.
There's a reason 1,800 companies left last year. And it's not because they hate the scenery and weather.

I was not aware of that. I figured Colorado was too though. What’s going on in Idaho?

Great place to raise a family, some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. Idaho has been one of the fastest growing states for some time now.
ETA: and it’s not from births either. The vast majority of their growth is from people moving there from other states.

People leaving California for a lower cost of living. Boise is booming.

People get hung up on the overall numbers and don’t take into account that you can still have a great quality of life in those states.
Louisiana may have a higher percentage of dumb, poor, and fat people but none of that affects my day to day life.

How much of that is limited to the Boise area, though?
I went to Sun Valley last year -- drove up from SLC. Passed through some pretty poor areas. Lots of trailers and shite. The contrast between SV and the nearby areas was pretty stark.

Yeah Florida is a pretty well run state. The citizens are a complete train wreck. I live in south Florida

That didn’t really answer my question. What economic growth has there been for people to move there? It’s obviously a nice state but there’s plenty of nice places to live in the country.

My family is probably considered upper middle class or slightly higher. We don't live much differently in South Louisiana than similar people that I know in other states.

California literally had the two largest state surpluses in US history the past two years, and has the largest budget reserve of any state. Its economy is bigger than Texas and Florida combined.
I realize this isn't the Fox News narrative but w/e

Do your kids go to public or private school?

Private. We don't live in the suburbs though. I wouldn't put my daughter in an inner city school in Charlotte or Houston either.

Yeah I feel like I live better than 90% of the population anywhere
And I do it near all my family and friends

I like California but they do rank near the bottom in terms of fiscal condition. That takes into account things like pension liabilities etc. They will continue to create more social welfare programs too.
Again, look at the number of companies that have left for lower cost states like Texas.
California companies fleeing state in droves

It also has an above average poverty rate, high taxes and areas even the median income of the country cannot afford to live.
There are awesome things about California, but a very real downside too. I guess if you're upper middle class to rich it's a great place to live.
