Weapons experts chime in on my scenario

I have a browning BAR in .270 that i have been hunting with for nearly 20 years with no issue. Took it out of the safe and killed a doe with it earlier in the year with no problem. My adult son used it the other day and got a brisket shot on a decent buck we never recovered. 50 yard shot in a box stand. Had him go shoot it to see if it got bumped and was off site. Used a styrofoam deli lunch container as his target with a marksalot drawn bullseye. First shot didn’t touch the plate. Next two shots were about an 1-1/2” left but tight group
I went to camp a few days later and fired 4 rounds with same result. First one missed the plate, next three all in a good group but a touch left.
I’m going to get a poster board or something behind the target so i can figure out where that first shot is going but it ain’t good!
I’ve heard of cold shot discrepancy before but never thought it would be that bad. What causes this and why would it have just started doing it

ETA: really not sure unless something is loose.

have you tightened the scope down.
i have a hard time believing the first shot is legitmately that far off. i.e. i think your next 3 shots are pure luck

Scoped gun with a Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40
Range shots were made on a table with sandbags
Nothing noticeably loose on mount

How do i check for barell wear outside of taking it to a gunsmith?

I didn’t believe my son when he told me what it did when he checked it. That’s why I wanted to shoot it myself. My jaw dropped when it did the same thing

are you sure the rifle didn't get dropped or the scope wasn't bumped.
I had a buddy take his godchild hunting with a rifle that he had for 15 years and never had to adjust the scope POA. A deer walked out he told his godchild to take the shot and he completely missed. He checked the rifle after the hunt and it was shooting inches off. His godchild finally admitted to dropping the rifle that morning.

There's a tool you can buy to view the rifling (what the gunsmith will use). I don't know if that's your problem, but My step-father hunted with the same rifle forever and it started having fliers way off of zero. Took it to have it looked at and found out the barrel was worn out. He used it for roughly 20-25 years (and probably rarely cleaned it lol).

Are you using the same brand and grain size of ammo?
Posted on 1/15/19 at 2:09 pm to tigamike
Did you just switch the ammo?
I have a xbolt that will shoot like that with silver tips.

It is not consistently shooting off. If it was off for all shots i would write it off as getting bumped.
Read the post again. It only seems to be really off on a first “cold barell” shot. Any subsequent rounds fired with a warm/ hot barell are within reason of the point of aim but that first shot ain’t touching the paper!

sight it in with a cold one unless you plan on firing a warning shot

I have always shot Remington 130 grain pointed soft points in it. Never anything else

Would a cold/hot barell cause that much variation?? I can see an inch maybe but enough for it to be more than 6” off?? That’s insane
And it’s never done this before till now.
I didn’t check it this year before the season but normally shoot a 3 round group before every season and it’s never had this happen before.

one round "should not" heat the barrel up that much to cause that much of a variance. 3 or 5 rapid shots may but not two.
I'd bet something is loose somewhere on the gun.
I had a T/C encore in .308. The scope was mounted to the barrel. Theoretically it should be accurate with good rings, scope, etc.
nope. Somehow when the hammer made contact with the firing pin the barrel would shift. I couldn't get it to hit paper twice at 50yds.

you would not think, but with with what you have told us thus far, it is the only thing that makes sense

You wouldnt be able to notice it if it's a fraction off, which is enough to make a difference

I gave it a good scrub and cleaning after i last shot it. I will go thru all the mount screws and tighten down and try it again.
Will report back

Are you cleaning the barrel after shooting? First shot with a clean barrel can be off a little bit.
