The Reagan presidency was bookmarked by two air to air engagements between his air force and US Navy Tomcats. both ended in double shoot downs of the Lybian jets. Libya in 1973 claimed a 100 mile border into the gulf of sidra and the med. In 1981 Reagan ordered the US Navy to challenge this they did....and the Libyan leader got the message. Again in the waning days of his presidency and just a couple of weeks after the Libyan sponsored downing of a commercial airliner of Lockerbie, Reagan ordered the USN to again conduct operations well inside the Libyan claimed "line of death". Just like the first incident this one ended with 2 Libyan migs getting splashed. The attached link includes audio and video from one of the tomcats. LINK link to the aviationist

How many times in the history of air warfare has the leader of a nation okayed the bombing of an opposing leader’s house.
Reagan was The Man.
Reagan was The Man.

don't forget the "accidental" bombing/ near miss of the French Embassy. (they wouldn't let us use their air space)

We should have overflown their airspace anyway and dared them to send some of the gay arse Mirages up and try to stop us.

Reagan was VERY good to the US Navy. he nearly doubled the size of our fleet.

listening to the play by play for repeated 'encounters" in 1987 was pretty cool... every time the tomcats were given yellow and hold the Libyans turned around.... same for their little patrol boats when the intruders "painted" them.

Should have cloned his arse and just have him as the permanent POTUS. Hell, then we could update the abbreviation to PPOTUS!

I had just gotten to Lakenheath a couple weeks before this mission went off. Got to watch some glorious intel footage from our 111’s a few weeks/months after the attack.
Because of Frances sorry azz our 111F pilots and wizzos were in the cramped cockpit for over 13 hrs. Many had to be helped/winched out of the cockpits.
True story....and a big FU to France.
As the bombs were dropping an SR-71 left out of Mildenhall AB on a bomb damage assessment recce mission. It refueled , flew to Libya, (at xx,xxx ft over France) took photos and was back at Mildenhall with the BDA pics being analyzed before the first 111 landed at Lakenheath 8 miles away. This includes a cooldown period before the ground crews were able to handle the sizzling photo equipment area....
That , son, is cooking! ;)
