I Love The Government Shutdown. In Fact, I Want Annual Furloughs (No, They Don’t Get Paid)

Mandatory annual furloughs for bureaucrats. Two weeks every year. No pay.

Let’s make these public sector jobs more accountable and a little less cushy and save some money in the process.

What are they going to do? Quit their easy unaccountable jobs and go out and work in the private sector where economics do matter and results are expected? I don’t think so.

I want annual furloughs.

How do you save money? The employees will get backup plus overtime to catch up on all of the work they are behind on. It actually costs the government more money.

But we don't have a shutdown. We have government working just workers unpaid. It would be interesting to have a REAL shutdown. Meaning no flights, or passports, no FBI, cia or treasury functioning. Fannie Mae home financing postponed etc, etc etc.

There is no leverage to do anything by either party in this situation.

This shutdown has shown that a lot of these offices and bureaus can be closed permanently.

If we disrupt their paycheck enough, many will quit.

And honestly, if they aren't working right now there's a good chance we didn't need them anyway.

by making it policy and reducing the pay for those jobs based on the amount of time mandated off

simple math, let's say that Worthless Bureaucrat A (WBA) makes $120,000 for something that brings little to no value to most Americans

we force 2 weeks off and reduce his pay by $5,000 (1/12 of $120K = $10K, $5K is half of that, or 2 weeks worth)

would be better to just get rid of WBA, but the furlough idea coupled with reduced pay would be a good start

Right now, federal agents aren't getting paid but are still having to work. When you say a shutdown doesn't affect you, you mean to say it hasn't affected you yet, as most critical roles are being mandated to still work. Of course, this is not sustainable for more than a few weeks. To address a few of your points-

1- As big and as sprawling as the federal government is, calling every position a completely unnecessary position is stupid. Sure, we could cut back significantly and end much of the redundancy and inefficiencies but to simply say, "let's abolish the entire apparatus of the federal government, from the CDC to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to the Department of Justice" is a lazy argument. Feels good to say it but I doubt you've considered the full implications of such an existence.

2-My position does not exist in the private sector, though I'm certain I have the education and skillset to find alternative work outside the government purview. I do it because I believe in the mission. Because it needs to be done.

what are you babbling about?

there is no argument from OP to eliminate ALL federal jobs and programs

he has suggested mandatory furloughs coupled with a reduction in pay; yet, you have created a strawman and are arguing against something OP didn't even hint at

lastly, OP never addressed the fact that federal employees will receive back pay in full for the days off and work they have not done

was not brought up at all, except in responses to OP (more strawman)

My only major issue is they are going to get back pay when the return to work. We are paying them not to work. Considering how little work most gov't employees do, this seems to me to be frickING RETARDED.

I understand what you’re saying but you don’t understand how furloughs work in the government. You get back pay. It doesn’t work like that in the private sector in most places.

exactly

my wife just told me a story a coworker shared with her

her coworker is married to a man that works for the Department of Treasury - they flew him, all of his cowworkers and their families AND his counterparts from all over the country to DC for lavish Christmas party, complete with expensive hotels and flights

the waste and extravagance is mind boggling

it's past time to burn it all down

it does not work like that in the real world and should not in government

does not affect the suggestion in OP though

Perhaps not the OP's sentiments but in almost every thread about the government shutdown, there are throngs of posters screaming to extend or permanently institute a shutdown. This thread is no exception. So I'm speaking to those individuals expressing that viewpoint.

Yep your right we always get back pay. But we in our Dept have to go to work still on furlough. So we are working for free until we get our back pay back.
So remember some of us government workers you need working.

I wish this would go on for six months or so. It needs to go on longer so that people will look around and say “huh, wtf do these people do anyway?”

yes, that is why this thread is a little more interesting than most of the others (to me at least) - it's a different twist; IE - let's make the shutdown an annual policy that also includes a reduction in pay

This thread is no exception
yeah, one guy with what looks more like a snarky comment than actual screaming

yeah, I hear you, just giving you a hard time
