I live in Latvia but am from America and commute (Europe to USA and back) a few times a year. I avoid Turkish Airlines because, while the prices are good, I would have to stay over one night in Instanbul. I was not so much afraid to do so as I was pissed about the pain in the arse that was.
But one time the price was SO good, like seventy percent less than any other airline was offering (even the traditional price dumping Ukranian Air and Aeroflot) that I thought, how bad can it be?
I had a WONDERFUL 24 hours in Istanbul. Great hotel, very pro-American people in the cafe's and shops (Where are you from sir, America, OH MY, how nice how can we help you, there is a good place around the corner for beef sandwiches, etc etc).
I had a great time there surrounded by wonderful people.
A business partner of mine expanded his consultancy to Turkey as well, found them to be great partners, willing to learn and listen but also ask sharp (but fair) questions and they always paid on time, something his American clients often did not do. He also was a big fan of Turkey though the current President's actions regarding Muslins seem to be less Demcoratic than theoratic (and I agree with that assessment).
All in all, though, Turkey is a nice place

Ephesus is quite a religious/cultural experience.

Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia have always been dangerous destinations for Americans. Really all Muslim countries. The wife of one of my dad's colleagues was kidnapped in the UAE back in the late 70s/early 80s. He never saw her again. Civilized people don't go to Muslim nations.

US citizens face more danger in democrat run cities than in countries abroad.

I'm guessing he has never traveled much outside his hunting camp.
Istanbul is indeed awesome.

Istanbul is actually a pretty cool city, and very western/liberal.
The rest of the country? Shithole
<--- lived in the shithole part for four months.

I’d definitely stay out of Chicago and St Louis.
I'd take Baltimore off the list. Parts of LA are a little dangerous too.
I'm personally okay with New Orleans but only because I know were to go an not go.

Lucky bastard. I'd move there in a heartbeat if I could convince the wife it's not THAT cold there in winter.
