Busted for deer sausage and raccoon carcass scandal, Louisiana man gets fine, probation

A St. James Parish man who led state Wildlife and Fisheries agents and sheriff's deputies on a high-speed car chase after he was busted in an undercover sting over an illegal deer sausage sale must serve five years' probation and pay a $1,000 fine plus other court costs, prosecutors said.
Before the chase that reached 95 mph and went through St. James and St. John the Baptist parishes March 14, Brandon J. Engham, 31, thought he was selling 10 pounds of wild deer sausage for $60 to a buyer inside a Winn-Dixie parking lot in St. James Parish, an arrest report says.
But it turned out Wildlife and Fisheries agents had been investigating Engham over allegations he was illegally selling wild game. They converged on him in the parking lot after the purported sale, setting off the chase that involved his nearly hitting agents and crashing into an agent's car to make his initial escape, the report says.

In a plea agreement with prosecutors in St. James Parish, Engham pleaded guilty to aggravated flight from an officer, aggravated assault with a motor vehicle upon a peace officer, buying and selling wild quadrupeds or wild birds, cervid carcass importation, prohibited acts involving interstate commerce, and failing to keep records of commercial fishing data.
Judge Jason Verdigets of the 23rd Judicial District gave Engham five-year prison sentences for both the aggravated flight and assault counts and six months each on the wildlife and fisheries counts Dec. 17 at the parish courthouse in Convent. But, under the plea deal's terms, the judge ran the sentences together and suspended them in favor of probation, a fine and court costs.

Im glad we took the time to set up a sting on this, deer meat is a gateway meat. Next time it would be whooping crane.

I get you’re saying but we have to enforce these laws. The commercialization of wild game is what led to essential extermination of the American bison. Elk took a huge hit too. It’s a slippery slope. You don’t want every baw with a meat grinder out slaying everything on four legs just to make his beer drinking money.

If my neighbor reimbursed me the cost of processing for 10 packs of deer meat I shouldn’t be s criminal
I would assume the guy was processing a legally taken deer and selling that. So I don’t care what he does with his own deer meat
I can imagine Winn Dixie doesn’t want him in the parking lot.

Why would you assume that? He is committing an illegal act, but you think it was harvested legally?

But it doesn’t cost $6/lb to have it made into sausage. Baw was selling it for profit and probably isn’t his first time doing it and was probably trying to sell meat to more than just family or friends if LDWF was setting up a sting operation

Because he wasn’t charged with poaching?
Also people in the OT thread completely missed the point. This law isn’t to keep unhealthy meat out of the hands of parking lot buyers, it’s to stop the commercialization of a game animal. I get it’s not the end of the world but it’s important nonetheless.

Profit or not I only have a problem if he had violated bag limits or taken the animal illegally.
If he uses his personal tags within the rules I don’t care if the meat freezer burns in his freezer or if he sells it

It may seem petty, but you should care. Those deer are not his to sell.

He ran from the law. Bad move.

what about endangering the life of the game agents and others in chase - judge/DA were useless- should have got some jail time

If you’re gonna hunt and take game, follow the rules. That means all of them.
Every hunter would love to be able to hunt and make money. Let people start selling sausage @ $6/lb (higher for blackstrap) and the cooper stealing rednecks are about to start having a lot more fun and make money.
If you believe this guy making $60 for 10 pounds of sausage just had some extra he was trying to unload then I have some ocean front property in Az to sell you.

But its ok for the state to sell them? Like said earlier, if he bought lic. And legally killed the deer, who cares what he does with the meat? It's ok for a processor to buttrape you to make sausage and sell you your own deer back to you, but you have a problem with a guy processing his own and selling it? Communists I tell ya.
And if he did take the deer legally...then they are his deer.

So these deer are over his limit?
We see people on this board talking about killing more deer than they personally consume and finding people that want it. Is there a big difference?

One thing yall forgettin that makes the government angry is they dont get their cut in tax money. Same thing with hoe made booze. It is the tax evasion that pissed em off

Ok let’s say this deer was well within his limit. When he signed that license he agreed to hunt and take game knowing he could not sell the meat. By signing that he engaged in a sort of contract with the state. Well he didn’t follow the rule.
Nobody said he couldn’t give it away. He’ll, donate it to HFH.

I know it's only speculation on my part, but I doubt it was legal. People selling game don't worry about the rules.

To those not caring what someone does with venison as in selling it: do you not see a problem here? Not a chance for abuse, right?
Are you fishermen!?
What say y’all about a few ole boys going out daily and catching legal limits if sacalait or Bass and selling them?
No problem, right?

Whats the difference in selling a bass or selling a catfish? Fish is fish.
