And "letting them go" is a non-starter for anyone who understands how detrimental such a move would be to both parties. Very similar to Brexit in that regard.

Where do you think they would fall? Accounting for the loss of the benefit CA receives from being a US State, based purely on population and available resources, infrastructure, and economic activity, how far do you think they would fall exactly?

There is almost 40 million people out there. They would not become Sri Lanka. They would have an economy probably pretty darn similar in size to that of Canada or the UK.

What is laughable about that? It stands to reason that House members should represent roughly equal (or as equal as practicable) populations. That is the entire point after all.

Im not making a partisan argument. There are ways to do this without upsetting the balance of power in the Senate.

The only reason you want to do that is to try and get the senate back. You can try to act impartial all you want, but that doesn't make it true. Shame such a great state was ruined by your bunch.

California could've been the greates state of all, but a toxic left-wing mindset has destroyed that place. Hell, even Arnold Schwarzenegger ultimately turned into a Soy Boy.

RIP, Cali. We hardly knew ye.

I am a registered Republican and have never voted for a Democrat in any election at the state level or higher.

Splitting Illinois and New York into two states each would benefit the GOP (by creating two red states and 4 senators), counterbalancing the hypothetical partition of California into three states (which would add 4 Democratic senators)

Not necessarily. But if you are going to categorically dismiss California's economic power, i'd like to hear what you are basing it on or why you think it wouldn't perform at the level that similarly situated, already-existing nations do.

Repeating SCOTUS jurisprudence regarding the secession of a US state is hardly a globalist position.

I don't advocate for global positions in the least. I don't oppose Brexit, at least not fundamentally. The UK is fumbling the ball on it and would be better off just staying than leaving without a deal, but thats not the same thing as opposing it all together.

Fair enough. I however don't understand splitting Illinois. I understand upstate NY doesn't have the same needs as NYC, but there really isn't enough to make a state in Southern Illinois. At least NY has over 8 mill upstate.

You are too mad, bruh. I conceded in a subsequent reply that CA's economy would lose the benefits of statehood. That doesn't mean their economy wouldn't still be massive.

Do you want me to go edit my post and remove the word "sixth" so that you can get off the semantics and back to the merits of your position?

Downstate Illinois has 4-5 million. Chicago metro is around ten, but some of that is in Wisconsin and Indiana. Total population of Illinois is between 13 and 14 million I believe

The Calexit people are so stupid.

It would not be great for the USA but it would be an absolute disaster for California, or whatever part actually exited.

It would be a third world country in a matter of a few weeks.

In the 1800s there were lots of Americans who didn't want to stop at westward expansion. 'Why not go north and south? Take over Canada and Mexico and we'll be the biggest damn country in the world.'

If that had happened we would now be faced with Mexit and Canexit.

So you just want to make Chicago it's own state? No way. You have to include the northern part. The "state" of Southern Illinois is 1.2 mil. A metro area the size of Chicago shouldn't have that much influence in the senate.
