A lot to dissect in that paragraph. For one why is it relevant that he had a boozy night out if he was a pedestrian? And to add that he was just steps from his door - As if to suggest “Damn he was so close. Another few feet and he was home free.”

I'm thinking the boozy night out was why he was lying in the street to begin with...

My only take is that it might have impaired his judgement and led him to be careless in the encounter with the driver. One could ask just as easily why the article felt it was relevant the driver was delivering pizzas? Both mentions seem to cast shade on each side right off before any facts are introduced.

Drunk pedestrians are more likely to die drunk than drivers are, believe it or not. The problem is that the drunk drivers tend to kill other people, while the peds just weave into the road to be human pinballs.

Edit: And yes, I would have comforted her.
