Interesting location for a fire to start, unless deliberate. Fortunately, FDNY should be able to reach it and snuff it out quickly. Good thing it wasn't on an upper floor.
Smoke is the real killer. If fire codes are up to speed, smoke should not spread through stairwells.

Not a lot of natural ignition sources in a high-rise entrance. That's what makes it look suspicious, at least to me. Not to mention the black smoke.
Remember the guy who poured gasoline at the entrance of a dance club in NY or NJ. His girl friend was inside.

We had a crackhead do something like that at a local mall some years ago.
The idiot came through the entrance with a can of gas, poured it on the floor and lit that mother up.

Holy crap!! I am taking my wife and kids they’re for a week in February and that is only one block from Grand Central Station. My hotel is literally 7 blocks North of there and a few blocks East. Damn! Could have been us if this happened in February and I was in the Ann Taylor located at street level of that building doing some shopping with my wife and daughters. This goes to show how close we all are to catastrophe.
