Your original point changed a central plot element. Change Christmas to birthday, and what's the result? I don't care about reshoots or edits.

The result is it's still mainly about a kid wanting a bb gun, everyone telling him it's too dangerous, his cantankerous father still gives it to him, and Ralphie shoots his eye out just like everyone warned.

Die Hard is essentially the same movie with a few minor changes, A Christmas Story is fundamentally changed with entire scenes based on Christmas that can't be changed

It's not a central plot point to die hard, you could edit it out of the movie and it would be coherent good movie without reshoots. That would be tough to do for a good portion of A Christmas Story. You could reduce it from a movie to a TV show format though.
