I'm currently reading the 2nd book in the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi. So far its been a quick, enjoyable read. Its a great concept set in an interesting universe.

Not yet, i have some other books ive already bought that i want to get to.
About to finish book 3, the ending has been fantastic.
Comparing shadow campaigns to powdermage - i think overall i liked shadow campaigns better.
The gods/magic and ending of powdermage is superior, but shadow campaigns has the better military / battle sequences and some other stuff i liked better that I wont go in to for spoilers.

It's pure sci fi. I've only read the first three I think, but they are quite good. He has a star trek parody novel called Redshirts that is very good and amusing as well.

Interesting, i've been on a long fantasy kick lately so am looking at picking up some sci fi and other stuff for a little break.
Just started Moon Is A Harsh Mistress, very excited to read it for the first time. But I'd imagine i'll be done with it pretty quickly.

Took a small break from Wheel of Time as finished Path of Daggers (book 8) to go through some of the library books I got through Libby. Most of them have not been great 
Lots of the popular YA fantasy is not awful, but also not very good. None of it better than 3* for me.
Once I finish this last (Oathbound by Mercedes Lackey), I'll have gotten through all holds that are available and burn right through the rest of the slog in Wheel of Time.

Pretty much, the only exceptions in my experience are things labeled YA written by normal authors who are just dabbling in a series with YA protagonist. Brandon Sanderson's Reckoners series and Joe Abercrombie's shattered sea trilogy being good examples of this, as both are very good.

Looks like it has great reviews, I'll have to check it out sometime. But given that it is Sanderson and he has a bazillion projects going at any one time, I'll probably wait till he finishes the series first.

I just listened to the first one - it was pretty stand-alone, most all of its real conflict was solved and it sort of leads in to the book 2 stuff at the very end.

Yeah skyward was a good read and sets up Starsight well, I’m about 3/4 through Starsight which is even more sci-fi. Really enjoying the series so far. Sanderson has a very easily digested writing style.
Another good YA fantasy series is the Scythe trilogy by Neal Shusterman.

I'm about to start Traitor's Blade / Greatcoats series and the author has what looks like a 6 book YA series as well which has good reviews.

Yeah, it's a great series as well (I still need to read the last one though). I don't really think of it as a YA series though, but I guess technically it is.

Oh i just saw it categorized as that when googling, no idea.
Ended up reading the first greatcoats book in one sitting today. Just finished and really liked it - author is able to get humor through very well and has a lot of great dialogue.

I think you are right that it's considered YA, it's just sometimes when these books are called YA it's in name only in some ways.
For example, the main difference between Abercrombie's YA series and his main book series was a lack of the awkward sex scenes he's kinda known for. The Spellslinger series has a young adult protagonist but not a lot of young adult book series tendencies.
Glad you are digging Greatcoats, de Castell deserves more press, it's an awesome series. And yeah, the humor between the greatcoats themselves is great, I love the archer (who's name escapes me at the moment).

Probably going to add both these series to my reading list. Thanks for exposing me to a potential new series/author. 
Might have to listen to these on Audible the narrator Joe Jameson sounds awesome.
My reading list is probably 20-25 books long right now though, read about one a week on average.
