Clemson is in their 4th straight CFP, but haven't had an OL player drafted in 3 years

Their last OL draft pick was Isaiah Battle in 2015.
Granted, they've had some talented teams elsewhere, but I find that fact to be pretty incredible. Their offensive success despite a stout OL is impressive.

That's actually how I came across this fact. I was discussing OL and DL talent at LSU vs other elite schools.
The admins on the rant don't seem to have much patience for me lately, plus, this place is better suited for the discussion.

Really interesting point, actually.
1. Great defense
2. Great QB play
3. Really good scheme
4. shite conference

The ACC is abysmal.
Clemson was rendered incompetent against Alabama last season. BARELY could move the football.
We don't know how good their offense is this year either.

They also had no OL players drafted in 2016 and 2017, years where they moved the ball at will against Alabama.

Watson
Did they run the ball well those years? Outside of Watson scrambling?
ETA: They averaged 2.2 ypc in 2017 and that's taking into account Watson scrambling. He's averaged 2 ypc.
Jalen being like 1/13 on 3rd downs and Alabama's defense playing 99 plays killed Alabama at the end. Clemson didn't have some amazing offensive performance until the very end of the game when Alabama's defense was dead.

That is pretty amazing actually. Good coaching.

how many guys were draft eligible?
just looking at their participation report, 4 of the 5 guys they have now are multiple year starters. Their OT Mitch Hyatt has started 55 career games, for instance. Thats 4 years.

That's not exactly the only measurement of a good offense. They hung 550 yards on Alabama in 2016 and 511 yards on them in 2017, all with zero draft picks on the OL.

It is pretty important, though.
Watson was amazing. And the ACC provides almost ZERO resistance for them or any other legit team to make the playoff.

Not sure, didn't check.
ETA - looked at the 2016 depth chart for the first matchup with Alabama. Hyatt is the only starter still on the team, a team that hung 550 yards on Alabama with 4 other OL guys who went undrafted.

and yet they (along with OU) get the benefit of the doubt b/c they have a traditional name and are in a traditional conference while UCF gets the middle finger.

Didn't Clemson suck arse until Dabo took over?
Posted on 12/6/18 at 5:17 pm to Dr RC
I think that has more to do with only playing one P5 school per regular season
But solid logic attempt there. Not sure if anyone will buy it however

This is the first year the ACC has been really bad. It was neck and neck with the SEC just two years ago in 2016.

P5 is a lame term made up by ESPN meant to lower the bargaining power of the G5 (another made up term) conferences when their TV deals come up. Crap on them enough and they can be re-upped for cheap and be trapped ESPN3 and ESPN+ like is happening to CUSA and Sun Belt teams. If you still lose them at least they can sell to their Disney overlords that it's no big loss.
