Sid Meier's Gettysburg! and Antietam!

I recently broke out these games I've had since the late 90's. I hadn't played them in years and was pleasantly surprised that they both ran successfully on my computer. I had forgotten just how addictive these games can be. I also have the Strategy First games Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle and Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory. These games are totally engrossing and are very challenging playing against the computer.
Any other gamers here who are fans of these games?

I'm all about the original Pirates from Meier.

I can enjoy these games just as much, if not more, than the modern games.
Back then there was more strategy. Today is more of progressing through a linear story.

I think I'll try to find a copy of some of these. I remember looking at the TalonSoft games at the time and finding them pretty impressive-looking.

What I find really interesting about these games is controlling the individual infantry brigades, cavalry and artillery units and maneuvering them in real time during a set piece battle like they used to have back in the day. What's fun about the Napoleonic games is that the cavalry is still a potent battlefield weapon (unlike in the American Civil War games) that has to be accounted for. If your infantry gets attacked by a combined infantry and cavalry force, they are in trouble if you can't drive off the enemy cavalry, as the infantry have to form "square" to defend themselves against the cavalry charges, but then get shot to pieces by enemy infantry in "line" formation. I know these are just games, but in a small measure they do give you some insight as to what the real-life generals faced on a battlefield in terms of problems, like terrain obstacles, not necessarily knowing where all the enemy force is at the start of a battle and having to be aware of some units which are "green" and "inexperienced" and can be routed easier.

My favorite Sid Meier game was Sim Golf. I loved that game.. last time I tried to install it, it wasn't compatible with the new version of windows.
Would love to play it again.

The second one was pretty fun too.

I've been wanting to get my hands on a copy of Gettysburg for awhile now... I wish GOG would pick it up at some point. I didn't even know about Antietam, I'll keep my eyes open for that one too.
If you haven't tried it, this game is kind of a spiritual successor to Sid's Gettysburg... I have it and love it.
Ultimate General: Gettysburg
This is a less-focused (covers the entire war rather than one battle) but also very good/more involved Civil War game from the same maker:

I was really happily surprised when my games successfully ran on my computer. I figured there'd be no way they'd be compatible. I have read that sometimes you can download a patch, but I have never done it. A good golf program can be a lot of fun. I remember playing one years ago that was really good but don't know the maker.

Thanks, I will look into getting these games. They look like a lot of fun. I wonder if people have pre-owned copies of Sid Meier's Gettysburg and/or Antietam for sell on Amazon or eBay? May be worth a shot.

Yep, I've seen Gettysburg on Amazon before but I was kind of hesitant to pull the trigger because (like you) I figured there was no chance that it would run on a modern system. I'm assuming you're using Windows 10?

I installed Sim Golf on my pc a few months ago but wouldn't run. Researched it some, and there is aspects of the game files that Win10 no longer supports. The only way to get it running is running it through WinXP or Win7 according to some comments.
I really liked that game. Still holding out hope that they make something close to it.
I've heard of other Golf Tycoon/Sim games but nothing like Sim Golf. One Day..

Actually, I am still using Windows 7 on my home computer. My computer is about four or five years old.

Yeah, that's unfortunate. I guess I got lucky as my home computer is about 4 or 5 years old and still runs on Windows 7. I'm glad I didn't get rid of it for a new model like I was thinking about doing about six months ago.
I know the CACRC of Baton Rouge sells refurbished computers at pretty low prices sometimes. I'm guessing they might still have some older computers running on Windows 7. Here is the link:

I realize you are in the Houston area, but I know that the CACRC of Baton Rouge refurbishes and sells older computers at pretty good prices at times. May be a longshot, but they might have some PC's with Windows 7 loaded onto them. I would be willing to bet that Houston (as huge as it is) might even have better resources for older computers on the market. Anyway, here is the link to the CACRC of Baton Rouge:

I found this link from WalMart showing computers with Windows 7 installed on them. Prices are pretty reasonable too. This might be an option:

The old TalonSoft Battleground series is still supported and having games made for it. Hang on and let me find a link to the new company.
Ah, here we go.
All the old games are there, plus a few new ones. I have very much enjoyed the one based on the Overland Campaign. There is a option to play the entire Overland campaign at the brigade level. Extremely detailed and, if you play as the South, exceptionally difficult. You get a good feel for just what Lee was up against.
If anyone ever wants to play a PBEM game, drop me a message.

Thanks for the link. I think I'll dive in and buy both.
