He was just alerting the Bengals that the should evacuate and not come back. The result would have been better for them.

I was kinda confused.
At first I thought that Payton smashing the fire alarm is what set it off in the stadium.
But I think I realize now that the alarms were going off, and he got pissed off while he was trying to get his team ready, maybe thinking it was some prank or something, and smashed it to shut it up.
Some comments lead me to believe that this story has been interpreted in both ways.

Report before game payton was worried about team not being awake for early game. Payton was going back to lockerroom to yell per report. I think he went back to send a message and wake them up.

That's a bush league move by the Bengals to try to throw of their opponent.
I'm glad it got smashed, but if it was by Payton he could be in some legal trouble (not jail time shite but not $100 fine shite either).

Unless the other report is true and Payton smashed it to wake the team up. That would just be stupid (even if it did work).
