Why do modern sequels have to have the franchise name before it?

I'm so sick of Pirates of the Caribbean: Insert Sequel name. It was a breath of fresh air to see The Dark Knight not have Batman before it. If Return of the Jedi came out today it'd be titled Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. If a film is good, people will see it. Brand/name recognition be damned.

Defeats the entire purpose as to why studios do sequels in the first place

Brand recognition guarantees money. No one attacks Godfather 2 because the title isn't original.

So, massive gain if the movie isn't great, no loss if the movie is great. That's why.

We'll they're rebooting it, so im sure the next one will be just plain ol Pirates of the Caribbean. The screenwriter to all the PotC is already ready to reboot the franchise. I didnt watch the last two, but good lord dude, wait a little while. Take some pride in what you've already done.

The sequel to Halloween is named Halloween. So there's that.

Creed somehow made money without Rocky: Creed before it. Same with Prometheus.

The first Pirates was

PotC: Curse of the Black Pearl

The series always used the Brand: Subtitle.

I get it, but it annoys me too. Fantastic Beasts is going to use that name the whole way through as well. That is going to become increasingly more about Dumbledore and Grindelwald, but they will be stuffing creatures in each movie to justify the name.

many of those sequels with names you don't like made money too.

Creed is a bad example. It was more of a reboot masquerading as an original.

Creed is a continuation of Rocky so yes it is a direct sequel. It constantly references events from the previous films.
