Is the franchise partially published by Nintendo? I'm playing Torna (first one of the series for me), and this game would look amazing on the PS4 or PC. Can't see shite with the low resolution on a docked Switch.

Monolithsoft is a 2nd party for Nintendo, and yes, Nintendo publishes the XB games.

I played the majority of XC2 during travel, therefore, undocked. I had 0 issues with reading/playing the game.

Nintendo is a majority share holder of monolith which in turn makes them a second party, and Nintendo their only publisher

That's fine, but the game still feels like a PS4/Xbox One game downgraded to play on Switch

720p docked is just disgusting

It's a beautiful game, what are you talking about?

And Torna is optimized a little better too.

Not true. They are wholly owned by Nintendo. They have some old contracts that require them to do some games for other companies, but they're a first party studio.

The term "second party" is reserved for when development is done by someone outside of your company, but is being publishing by you. Hence, you own the IP and its exclusivity but not the team who is making it. Bayonetta 2 was second party as Nintendo foot the bill and published it.

Yikes. Game ran below PSP resolutions at times undocked.

Didn't realize this. Thought it was just significant stake, not wholly.

I thought second party was studio ownership only, not contractual development.

Eh, I just don't require Hi Res everywhere I go game ran fine. Plus, it's mobile. There are always sacrifices, and they are worth it in this case for the system. I play my Switch 80% of the time undocked. Prior to that I haven't had a portable since the DS. And I play it way more than the X1 for that very reason.

XC2 isn't a lesser game because it isn't on a PS4/X1 for the very reason that plenty of amazing games are 1) Indie games 2) 20+ Years old

I mean, in reality, the definitions don't matter because we make them up to better classify these companies. That's always what's it been for my time on the internet.

Another good example is Ratchet and Clank. IP is owned by Sony and they deal exclusively with Insomniac to make the game. Insomniac isn't owned by Sony, but they reguarly work together (almost exclusively but not always). Game Freak is a good example of a studio that would does a lot of 2nd party games for Nintendo.

No one said it's a lesser game. All I'm saying is they failed to work within the constraints of the hardware which is odd for a game that is exclusively on a Nintendo platform. It's hard to appreciate a lot of the game's beauty when it looks like there's vaseline smudged all over the screen. During battles sometimes you can literally count the pixels on the characters.

Although I would definitely say it's a lesser game for being on poor hardware. Game is open world and suffers because of hardware limitations. The same exact game would have been better on any other platform. This is kinda what PC people have been saying once you get past year 1 of any new console.

That said, game wouldn't exist without the Nintendo platform it's on, so it's really a non-starter argument.

If it feels lesser, I think it has more to do with lack of budget than hardware limitations. I don't think Xenoblade on PS4 would be any more expansive if it were on PS4 or Xbox One unless Sony/Microsoft helped to foot the bill.

I just want sharper visuals. The character design and game world are too detailed for 720p to be acceptable. Too much detail on the armor/weapons is obscured, especially when the battles get intense. I am fairly certain there's some kind of dynamic resolution even when docked that dips below 720p in battles.

The game was designed exclusively for the switch yet can barely run on the hardware it was released on. Even with the low resolution, it's not as if the game runs at a flawless 60 FPS. It's mostly 30 FPS but at times dips well below.
