I've always been aware of him. He has had a prolific career over 50+ years, but i've never really listened to him. I've heard him, and seen movies he's scored, but he's always sort of been on the periphery of my musical interests. So...I'm looking to change that, and for a good place to start...

Taking all recommendations!

This was my very first CD. Probably a good starting point for him. It's been a while since I've listened to him much but always appreciate when I hear him in a song. I love that he played slide on Willin because Lowell George had hurt his hand. And I love his playing on Zevon's final album. Great slide player.

Probably my favorite Ry Cooder song:

I think it's going to work out fine.

His title song for the movie Paris, Texas borrowed from Blind Willie Johnson's "Dark Was the Night, Cold was the Ground" and is simplistically haunting. His slide work is amazing.

Buena Vista is fantastic. I'd also recommend John Hiatt's Bring the Family. Cooder's work on that is exemplary -- especially on tracks like Lipstick Sunset and Memphis in the Meantime.

Start here:

"It's All Over Now"

Then move on to his other '70s albums

Didn't RC do all the slide work on Crossroads (the Ralph Macchio movie)?

Blood Simple? I think that was how I first heard of him and promptly scoured download sites for his tracks.
