Andy Staples of SI said on 104.5 in BR this morning that the most intriguing stat of the LSU vs Ala game, is yards per play YPP. And that the best defense Alabama’s offense has faced was 90th in YPP. As dominating as Alabama’s offense has been, it hasn’t played against even a decent defense, now it’s about to face a great defense in LSU.

LSU's defense is 31st in YPP, for reference.

LSU’s schedule up to this point includes five ranked teams, for reference.

I would tend to agree if Devin White was playing the full game, but when you take away All-American Devin White or Jacob Phillips, it changes the defense. It showed against Florida that LSU needs the downhill thumper at the MLB position that can run and tackle sideline to sideline. If Queen can step in and play well, LSU's defense will be fine.

I like Patrick Queen as a player, but he's young and lacks the experience to be fully trusted. Hopefully Aranda can mitigate that with a scheme for the first half that doesn't ask him to do anything he can't do consistently yet.

It really sucks that the SEC decided to tarnish this game with the BS suspension and not even allow an appeal to get it right. Oh well, next man up!!!

My only question when people cite these stats is: Are they citing what those defensive averages are without taking into account the Alabama game?

Every team they played would have had an increase in YPP after they played Bama. What do those defenses look like without playing them?

Have you seen their schedule? You don’t need to look at stats. They haven’t played anyone. The way they’ve been running up the scores is not unlike BIG 12 teams against weaker defenses.

Why are you telling me this? Maybe you should forward this comment to the person quoted in the OP, since they're the ones "looking at the stats."

My question is aimed at making an apples to apples comparison when using the stats. Additionally, if you don't want to look at the stats, maybe don't click on the thread based around statistical comparisons.

Lets take out our defensive performances against top offenses too.
Let's not factor in the fact that Ole Piss is a top 10 offense despite getting drummed by Alabama and LSU. They are putting up 538 YPG. When you factor out Alabama and LSU games for them, it jumps to 621 YPG. Their combined total offense in the LSU and Bama game just barely eclipses their season average of 538.

You don't have to look at stats, or advanced stats, or pick and choose stats, to know Bama hasn't played a good defense yet. You simply look at the name of the teams they've played and you already know the answer.

The u and Auburn suck. We are 2-1 vs currently ranked teams, they are 1-0. We looked like dog shite in two of those games. That's where the concern comes in.

Why?

We are playing Bama this week. To this point, we have not played Bama. So taking the Bama game out of the stats for the other teams would put them in a more comparable situation to ours.

Lsu's defense opponents rank in the 80's in total offense. Bama ranks #2.

Tua has not played in the 4th qtr.,for reference.

LSU ranks 21st in total defense 330.3 ypg 2642 total yards.
TAMU ranks 24 in total defense 330.9 ypg 2647 total yards

UA had 525 yards against TAMU.
Minus the 525 yards, TAMU would be ranked 5th.
Again, Tua did not play in the 4th qtr.

I agree we will be the best defense they have faced. But have we seen an offense anywhere close to this?? Georgia is a good offense but not great. So it will be interesting....

All the numbers in the universe meaning nothing on Saturday night. It's about grown men being grown men. Who wants it the most, whos willing to sacrifice for it, whos going to refuse to lose the game.

the only statistic that matters is there is a 100% chance Tiger Stadium will be on fire and our team will feed on it.

How is it so hard to comprehend why you would take the Bama game out of the equation?

I can comprehend the why and still think its fricking stupid.

The stats I referenced were for a cumulative total, not a "per" stat. Of course removing the largest individual total from the total would have a drastic effect on the ranking to which is correlates.

LT.... is that Louisiana Tech? Really?

But yes, take away lsu's 417 against the #81 offense and take away TAMUs 525 against the #2 offense and yes, TAMU is only ranked 3 places higher than LSU. Good point.
