Next Great 25 Football Players

Michael Bonnette (@LSUBonnette)
Assoc. Athletic Director/Communications
BATON ROUGE – As part of LSU’s celebration of 125 seasons of football in 2018, the school has released “The Next Great 25,” a team comprised of the 25 best players by position over the last quarter century. The team was selected by the permanent team captains from 1993-2017.

For players to be placed on the ballot they had to fall under one of the following categories: First Team All-America, First-Team All-SEC, or first round NFL Draft pick. The team consists of 11 players on offense and defense along with three specialists.

The “Next Great 25” serves as a compliment to LSU’s Team of the Century, which was selected as part of the school’s Centennial Football Celebration in 1992.

The listing of the team, along with biographical information on those players, can be found at www.LSUsports.net.

Holy frick that D Line.

And that would have Mingo and Minter as backups As well as Eric Reid, Jamal Adams, Grant Delpit, and Mo Claiborne to rotate into DB.

ETA: Kind of unfair to put this out before the end of 2018 because Grant Delpit may win the damn Thorpe. A thorpe award winner was left off this list. That's how stacked we've been at Defensive Backs.

Yea, i thought Russell would have been the QB.
Ro wasn't eligible because he wasn't first team all american or first team SEC, plus he wasn't drafted in the 1st round.

Is NFL performance given equal weight to college performance? If this only takes into account LSU performance, Trai Turner doesn’t belong.

I disagree. He's right up there with La'el for best O-lineman in the Miles era.

I probably would've selected Stephen Peterman over Trai Turner

How the hell is Matt Flynn even on the ballot? He doesn’t meet any of the criteria.

Don't get me wrong Flynn was darn good but he didn't meet the requirements for the 25 selected.

He only played two years and most of this board thought he was insane to go pro. Someone like Ciron Black deserves it way more based on LSU performance. 4 year key starter but didn’t make the NFL.

Glad to see Josh Reed get the nod. I used to be agape at his after-catch moves.
