It's tempting to view Zebra in terms of black and white

As good as the debut album is, I have grown to like 3.V even more.
They are a kick arse rock and roll band.

Of the "B" bands?
Sure I guess so.... But really why waste time worrying about it...

Their debut was amazing, but the next few records were good, not great. Plus they didn't fit in with hairmetal and/or grunge so they faded away pretty quickly. Randy can do Zeppelin better than Zeppelin. Catch him live if you can...............

After their debut album, Zebra seemed to slowly fade away from the national music scene. They played 69 concert dates on their initial U.S. Tour back in 1983. No Tellin Lies was released in 1984 with 57 tour dates, followed up by 3.V in 1986 with 32 concert dates. In 1991, the band pretty much disappeared until 1997 when they started playing more concerts.
For those who may know (Pepe ?), did Atlantic Record executives just not push/promote Zebra like they did other artists ? Were Randy, Felix, and Guy resistant to scheduling 60+ concert dates across the country like they did on their first U.S. Tour ? I'm guessing family, life, alcohol/drugs, band members wanting to do solo stuff, and a difference of opinions between the band caused a rift which led to their concert hiatus in the early to mid 90's. One thing is for certain, the band will never run out of loyal supporters & followers in NOLA and Long Island.

Their debut album is in my top 10 all time. I just can’t believe that album didn’t launch them into the stratosphere. I’m glad they’ve been able to make a living out of it, but they deserved superstardom from that album. Randy Jackson is also one of my all time favorite guitarists.
On a side note, I enjoyed seeing Guy from Zebra on the drums with Sledgehammer (along with Steve from Lillian Axe) in Chalmette last Friday, They played a very diverse lineup of ‘70s-‘80s tunes - many songs that you just don’t hear cover bands playing. VERY tight band. Sadly they just didn’t draw the crowd they deserved.

After 3.5, Guy was diagnosed with cancer—that put the brakes on everything for a while.

Zebra made a huge mistake when they turned down legendary record producer Bruce Fairbairn who wanted to produce their third album 3.V. They decided to produce it themselves after the failure of their sophomore release. Fairbairn instead produced Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet" which ended up going 12x platinum.

I remember seeing a band Zebra at the Safari in Galliano back in the early ‘70s. They would be set up off to the side of the main stage. They would play when the headliner usually a band called Image would go on break.
Seems like I remember the bass drum painted like a Zebra. I always wondered if that was the humble beginning of the band we now know as Zebra. Oh the memories of the Safari.

yep. was the first time i personally had heard of a man with breast cancer. PJ filled in admirably during his recovery.

Also, they probably should have chosen Los Angeles instead of NY as their base.

If perception is reality, then it seemed like the PTBs were content enough to let Zebra sink or swim among a sea of hair metal acts, rather than make a better effort at promoting them for what they really were. I'll admit I didn't give them a chance after seeing their first video, which kinda put out the vibe of a hair act in pretentious mode, which probably wasn't the band's call to make....but a few years later, I'd heard their first two albums in their entirety, and realized these guys got a raw deal by whoever was managing their career.

They should have debuted their first album no later than 1981

I used to see them at St Christopher's when I was in high school. I'm pretty sure they were playing at least half the songs on the first album before I graduated in 1979. One More Chance, Tell Me What You Want and The La-La Song for sure. (I think ... It was 40 years ago and there were a shitload of Miller ponies and JD involved.)

I saw them once on the riverboat President. They concert was “over” and at least half the crowd left before any encore. Then for the encore they came back out and did a whole set of Zeppelin songs. Those people who left don’t know what they missed - I’ve always said the same thing about them doing Zeppelin better than Zeppelin does live.

I’ve always felt they should have held out a few more of those songs for their second album. I know that Wait Until the Summer’s Gone was their biggest hit on local radio and they saved that one for the second album, but I think they should have held a couple more out. The first album is so good, it’s almost like a greatest hits album. Hell, they could have milked those songs for 3 albums. Especially back then, a decent album had a couple hit songs, a good album had 3, and a great album had 4 hits. That first album has 7 songs that I’d call hits or single-worthy songs.
