This weekend my son was playing a soccer game and a situation occurred that no one knew, with confidence, the correct rule interpretation. His team was doing a corner kick and the ball was kicked directly into the goal by a player on the other team.

By rule, would that count as an assist for the person that took the corner kick? I would assume that it wouldn’t because if I had to guess an assist can only count when a player on the same team scores.

Just an own goal. You don’t get an assist for it.

Unless Harry Kane is on the team, why does anyone care?

Hells yea, call it an assist. There are no stats like that in youth soccer though. No one even tracks goals, much less assists.

BRSC?

It sounds like an own goal from your description, unless the ball was already going into the goal and was deflected.

But why even care about stats like that? Are parents really discussing that on the sideline? Who cares.
