help me out understanding why savage had no trade value?

i havent been watching or paying much attention to the saints but i was under the impression that savage was a known quantity as a rock solid stable reliable backup QB.
i figured savage would be leaving the team when they made the bridgewater trade, but i am a little shocked we got nothing for him and he was simply cut.
lots of teams are desperate for a back up QB and while i didnt think his value was high, i figured a solid back up QB that is a known quantity should be worth at minimum a 7th round pick or maybe even a 6th
was it a timing thing that it was just too close to final cuts to deal him so he was simply cut?
also i read in the saints practice squad thread they mentioned barret as the PS QB so are the saints keeping 4 QB or was the poster just high as frick when he posted that?
if we keep 4 QB why wouldnt we keep savage for the purpose of trading him?

Teams knew he was 100% getting cut and were fine signing him once he was released.
If they couldn’t get him, it would be off to Plan B.
In the end, this is Tom Savage. No one is trading for him.

His numbers as a starter are horrific.

Despite all our efforts we couldn't burn all the game tape on him from his time with the Texans

lol, i hear ya, but he is still better then 60% of the back up QB teams have on their rosters now.
he isnt taking anyone to the playoffs but he can come in and win a game or two for you until your starter is healthy again and that is the only value i put on him.
the moves i see teams make to get "failed" QBs as backups just made me thought the guy was worth "something"

teams knew we loved Hill, gave up a 3rd round pick for Teddy
teams also knew we weren't carrying 4 QBs on the 53
any potential trade was done the second the Teddy trade went through
from reports other teams were also talking to the Jets about Teddy...so you couldn't blindly move Savage first then try to make a move on Teddy...even if you did the price could have moved up.
Saints got a good deal in their opinion on a player they liked and jumped on it.

makes sense i guess, but the saints still had time between doing the teddy deal and making the announcement.
just still think "if nothing else" he could have been part of some sort of a player swap with another team who needed him. im sure we still have an area or two on the team that needs upgrading

Savage is a very low upside, mid grade backup QB. His only increased value is that he has starter experience, even though he shouldn't.
At best we could have gotten a 7th rounder for him if another team was desperate for a backup, but after the Teddy trade teams knew he was being released.
Now a team could have still been desperate enough that they didn't want to fight other teams for his service in FA, but this is Savage we're talking about, and other backup QB options still remain.
As for keeping 4 QBs, Barrett is on the practice squad and doesn't count against the 53. Savage is not eligible for the PS.
And we were not going to risk Hill to waivers to put on the PS just to keep Savage. Hill's upside is much, much higher than Savage's, even if their QB play is about what and what right now.

He is one of the worst backups in the league. He’s not good

i do not disagree, i just thought there was a "small" window there where we could get something, anything, for him.
i think he is better then an unknown rookie in that he has experience and such, not that he has an upside beyond "just being a backup"

ah ok, i did not realize there was rules that savage couldnt be moved to PS

oh i wasnt suggesting that, no way should hill be risked to waivers

Quick guess:
Captain Checkdown sucks???
Nah, couldn’t be that simple.
Yes it could

Because people value a 7th round pick more than they value his services (for very cheap).
The only reason we signed him is b/c he's dirt cheap & has actual game experience. He just isn't that good though.

This does not always matter. Even though it was true, if a team values a player enough they will trade for them to ensure he ends up on their squad.
