Would you have personally ever considered settling in Africa back during colonial times?

Would you have had enough faith that the European Powers would be able to maintain rule there, allowing you to enjoy better weather, nice and open land, etc?
A decent amount of people did actually make the decision to move there....would you have done it if you lived at the time it was an option?
ETA: assume you were a citizen of a nation that actually had colonies there. Belgium, Holland, England, etc

I've always wanted to see Africa. So yes, I probably would have. Now, I'm too scared.

Not all African countries are the same. There are places you can visit where you'd be just fine.

Thought never crossed my mind so that would be a 'no'

I would have liked to be a settler. Africa, US colonies, British India, Old West, etc. I wish there was somewhere besides the moon or Mars to settle nowadays. Even Antarctica has things settled enough to not be a settler.

Life in general was a lot less comfortable and secure back then, even in relatively "developed" countries. Probably for the same reasons that my ancestors immigrated from Europe to America 300-ish years ago in order to seek opportunity and possibly to escape poverty and starvation, if I were in their situations I may have similarly chosen to try Africa.

Yes, would have been safer.

Africa
Clears throat
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She's coming in, 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, "Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you"
It's gonna take a lot to take me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had...
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti
I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
Hurry boy, she's waiting there for you
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
(I bless the rain)
I bless the rains down in Africa
(I bless the rain)
I bless the rains down in Africa
I bless the rains down in Africa
(Ah, gonna take the time)
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

All of the land was taken in Europe. Your options as a lower class citizen was basically slave labor. Or, you could settle newly acquired land, which was basically given to you if you stayed there.

Yes. Rhodesia or Kenya. Kenya before “Uhuru” was nice for white folks. Peaceful living ,hard work, and some really good hunting.

I think South Africa would have been very appealing if you were Dutch in the 1600s. The Netherlands was already overcrowded, and the government offered free land and tax-exempt status to move to the Cape Colony. And, of course, there would be no way of seeing into the future and all that to see the various wars that would unseat the Boers as the dominant power on the Cape.
So I'd have to say yes, I would have strongly considered it.
