and 70's? Especially in the early 70's when the Orange Bowl had Poly Turf so there wasn't any field damage if the Dolphins had played on Sunday.

Just curious.

Probably because for much of their history the university was a complete afterthought (football-wise). A relatively small private school in a nice part of the city. They didn't become a football powerhouse until Howard Schnellenberger showed up in the early 80's and started to recruit the big time talent in Miami's ghettos. Before then few, if any, of those players ever went to Miami. So I doubt anyone really cared if they played on Friday or Saturday

Actually Miami had some pretty good teams in the 1960's with some periodic top 10 rankings. It wasn't uncommon for them to sell out games vs Notre Dame or Georgia. Some home games like Notre Dame and Alabama they would play on Saturday. But when LSU went there in 1968 and Auburn in 1967 and 1974 they played on Friday --when they played a lot of other schools. I'm sure there was more of a reason besides "no one cared."

Were they a suitcase college? Students went home on the weekends.

That doesn't seem likely because they're a private college meaning most of their student body has probably been from somewhere else.

I can answer that...in the early 1970s Miami almost disbanded their football program...no $$$$ They had some great players in the 1960s...the stork, Ted Hendricks was one, George Mira was another. $$$$ money was always a problem and Friday nights they didn't have competition like they would have had on Saturday nights.

Even today the Hurricanes play home games at a rented stadium 45 minutes away and if they are playing teams like Wake Forest or NC State...you could throw hand grenades into the stands and not hurt a soul. They only fill the stadium when they play FSU or if they schedule a Nueter Dame. If they visit your school...bring lots of hand sanitizer. Last time they were in Gainesville they had a mob yelling and screaming for a fight on the main street. I hate they are on our schedule next year.

They were like the Univ of Tampa that had some really good teams in the early 1970s, castoffs from Bama, Penn State etc etc. Then the slimeball owner of the Bucs paid off the school president to disban the program...he didn't want competition with the Bucs. If only the Dolphins owner had paid Miami off.

Wow! Is that true? Timing makes sense. My dad and I saw Tampa play Vandy in Nashville in 1973. Freddie Solomon was their QB. John Matucsak had played for them the prior year.

ABSOLUTELY true. Matusack or however you spell his name, should NEVER have been allowed to play NCAA football...he was an animal and had broken jaws and smash cars and was a nasty person. There is an edge to being a tough guy and being totally ruthless....he went beyond.

In todays social media world he would have been suspended wherever he went. His dad paid money $$ to get him transferred into Tampa Univ. A lot of plain ole students at Tampa had failed miserably at northern schools and a donation to the school bought them a diploma. It was sad...but $$$ talks at a small school.

The second owner of the BUCs was Hugh Culverhouse, an ugly fat toad who went to Bama and was a tax attorney..he bought the BUCs soon after the original owner bailed. He had an affair for years with a secretary that couldn't spell C-A-T. His wife was a miserable sort and daughter was a carpet licker. He paid to have Tampa Univ drop their program. When he died and left a lot of money to the woman he had an affair with..a nice battle in court ensued...Culverhouse was so ugly he had to pay for it. He bought that girl jewelry and furs.

They were using Aggie engineers to move the goalposts up.

Leave it to a Uif fan to spew bullshite.
One, you hate playing us because we've pretty much owned you since 1978, two we do pretty well attendance wise for a small(10K) private school, sure we'll never have the "attendance" trophy's like the gators, but we're ok with that, not sure why you care?

As for the question asked in the 50's & 60's Miami only had a handful of high schools and they would routinely draw 40-50K for the big games like Miami High vs Jackson.

The university on the other hand was only founded in 1925 and was an afterthought for many.

They’re an hour ahead. So maybe it was Saturday.

Yes, often times those games were on a Saturday, not saying that's the sole reason, but it's one of them.

I had always heard it was because of the large Jewish population in Miami. Most could/would not attend games on Saturday.
