Gov. Greg Abbott wants the state’s best teachers to earn a six-figure salary. Few teachers disagree with that idea but many still question where the money will come from.

Not sure about 6 figures but they are underpaid

Texas would probably run the program correctly. In Louisiana, every teacher would be top teacher in one year or less.

Who are the best teachers? In the current system it's based solely on education and seniority

That's fine if the other teachers are okay with not getting paid nearly as much.

They should, "WE" have some of the top public schools in the US.
Most of my kid's teachers have their masters.
With a masters in the field and say 10 years experience is a 100k too much ?

Depends on how effective they are

Wait until they realize that testing scores will determine the best teachers and not tenure.

Have great ones now, but agree if this happens it will have teachers wanting to relocate.

How do they define best teachers? It seems like a good plan on the surface but teachers in poor intercity schools that are failing are at a huge disadvantage. And then claims of racism will show its ugly head.

He's so full of shite lol
This is in direct response to a block voting initiative started last July by teachers. Their TRS insurance rates are abysmal and he, Dan Patrick and Cruz are all feeling real heat.
Total BS politics speak.

As it should.
My question is will the salary vary from year to year. This would certainly spark competition and if one year you're in the top ranks, and next year you miss it, does your salary reduce?

I always thought teaching should be merit based. Hell, most jobs should be merit based including pro sports. If you're great, you get compensated as such. If you suck, you shouldn't be teaching period.

Well that all depends on criteria used, doesn’t it?
It could also give them the biggest advantage.

In Alabama, kids are required to be in school 1080 hours per year.
If teachers make $100,000, they will be making almost $100 an hour.
The average anesthesiologist makes $111.00 per hour.
Seems like a good plan because we know the amount of schooling and the demands are about even. Maybe we could even change anesthesiology to a 4 year certificate and give them summers off and 3 weeks vacation at Christmas.
