Pretty good article and worth the read. Covers ATL UTD embracing and integrating the hip hop culture into its marketing, Soccer in the Streets, how Clarkston's immigrant community is a haven for the game, and how pay-to-play continues to be an issue despite the game's massive popularity in the city.

grass root stuff is always the best way to grow sports, and with soccer being cheap( a ball is all you need), you can reach more.

I have always said that America needs soccer to become a street sport more than it needs a France style academy system.

I think he was disagreeing with you. You don't just need a ball for golf and tennis. Golf clubs are very expensive, and Tennis Rackets can be too.
Football somehow remains the most popular sport among poor kids, and it has big equipment cost with all the pads, helmet, cleats, etc.
Basketball is probably a decent equivalent since you just need a ball and a court, much like soccer.

If you dumb soccer down to just needing a ball, then you can do the same with football. Basketball just needs a ball and some hoop. Baseball needs a stick and a ball. Tennis needs a cheap racket and a ball. You can get a sack of used golf balls or range balls for cheap. Go buy one cheap putter, iron, and wood.

I already said that.

No. No kid will excel at baseball with a stick and a ball, a cheap tennis racket for tennis, or just some golf balls and a few cheap clubs for golf.
I can see your argument for football, but that doesn't work so well when you throw in full contact.

You also aren't playing tennis or golf without a specific playing facility of some kind. at least with football and soccer you can play basically in an empty lot or field, hell even the street.

It's in areas where schools/town/people will pay for football gear before school books.

It's a task for plenty of adults with money to find convenient access to even shitty golf facilities, much less poor inner city kids

Easier to make goals with sticks or rocks or a shirt.
Anyway, good on ATL. Constant bitching about stadium attendence in other sports, but they have no problem getting people to show up.

Dear me.
Soccer you need a soccer ball and makeshift goal = $20
Football you need a football and landmarks for touchdown lines = $20
Baseball you need a bat and ball and glove and some trash to throw on the ground make bases = Around $100
Basketball you need a basketball and make shift hoop = $20
They are all comparable at a young age.

After I came back from France, I contacted US Soccer to try and get funding to start a program to put in street courts in several major cities. It ended up not being a successful proposition, unfortunately. How they can’t see that this is absolutely necessary to make Soccer on par with with the big three is unfathomable to me.
But, it looks like Target is doing exactly what I wanted to back then. I’m glad someone is finally doing it, and a little disappointed that I didn’t try the corporate route to secure funding.
