I work in the field and $75 is almost unheard of in SOLA. Designer 4s are making up to $60 on a contract basis but you need years of experience.

Both plants I have worked at lab techs made somewhere in the 30-45 an hour range.

I've been in the E/I Design field over 10 years, when work is good so is the pay but as I type this I'm currently looking for a new gig b/c work has dropped off where I'm at now. Very up and down work cycle.

Yep, they let go some people already. I'm busy but it seems the future work is not coming.

Wow.

Are you at a big shop?

We haven't let anyone go in over a year, hired quite a few since then. Shouldn't be hard to find a new gig.

Yes, like I said I'm busy right now but it seems as though not for much longer. No big jobs in the future, just small ones. I've asked around but nothing yet.

$20-30/hr

Just go to engineering school. Our drafter topped out career wise in his 30s where I started basically.

Designers in the Gulf South have a niche market. You won't go anywhere else in the US (other than Denver) making what you can make in Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. I am a designer and moving back to BR after living elsewhere and not making the money I can in BR. I actually applied at Jacobs and a few other places.
