Greens were punched again last week specifically to get them perfect for this event. Always a great turnout.
No public course in the area puts on a better tournament than Chris, Daniel, and Cody.
Calcutta Friday night at the 19th hole. Who’s in??

Are the greens simply punched or plugged? I have a tee time Wednesday, and don't want to play on plugged greens.

They got plenty of rain last week. Already mostly healed by yesterday even if they did play a little slow. You may hardly notice them by then. Punched. Small holes. Not the big plugs.

If I survive this weekend, I may be in.

I've legit heard the "these guys can really put on a tournament" line from almost every Greystone member on this site and every member I've had the fortune of playing with. I mean, down to the "they fill up within a day or two with multiple alternates" line. Is this the company line you get with a membership package?
But seriously, a couple of questions. And I preface this with I worked at a golf course in college, and helped put on a lot of tournaments.
What are they doing that is any different than anyone else? I mean:
Step 1: take entry fees
Step 2: set tee times
Step 3: score the tournament on a big board with the fancy calligraphy
Step 4:???
Step 5: profit
I get trying to get the course to peak at the right time or maybe setting pins in good spots. But I legit wonder what a couple guys in the proshop can do to make the tournament that much better, much less do it so good that every time I cross paths with a Greystone member they feel the need to tell me about these guy's ability to run a tournament.
Genuinely interested.

They haven’t done the plugs at all this year. Small holes and top dressing a few months ago. Then just a punch and let them grow last week.
And what MNC said. Practice round too. Food both days. Tee gifts. $100 pro shop credit. Pretty good deal.

For a public course, you’re getting 3 guys who are really involved to make sure it all goes smoothly and everyone has a good time. They’ve been doing it a long time and with every go, they ask for feedback from the format to the course setup to the food trying to make them better and better. The members certainly didn’t see that kind of attention to detail from the previous management.

It's $65 for a non member to play on the weekends. Times 3 equals $195. Factor in lunch, tee gifts, possibly winning a prize for the golf tournament, etc. Not saying it's over priced by any means, but I wouldn't be jumping out to use the word "steal" in connection with it.

State 4 Ball was not half the price of the Greystone 4 Ball. The State 4 Ball was $175 per man. Greystone 4 ball includes meals both days, drinks, tee gift, and a good bit more prize money.
No knock on the State 4 ball, as I’m a big LGA fan. Just clearing up what was stated.

You forgot the $100 credit.
And MNC and Bandit are being sarcastic.

I'm legit asking what they do that is different that sparks the urge for every member to tell me how good they are at running a tournament.
AKA sets tee times
This is good. This is kind of what I alluded to in my post. This is where I would think you could distinguish yourself as a tournament director. Is it set up US Open hard, fun/funky pins?
So the previous guys were bad at tournaments so these guys have to be better?
I'm honestly asking what they do that makes them so renown. If it's course setup, cool. I'd love to know what they do that is so unique or fun. If they set the tee times apart by 12 minutes instead or 7/10 so everyone is gapped well, I'd be interested in hearing about it. If they make sure the formats are fun and unique, what formats are y'all playing other than the best ball?
Granted, the Calcutta is cool and different for a public course. Not something you see in BREC tourneys. But Greystone isn't your typical public course. I find it much closer to private than public.
Again, I'm not hating or picking on Greystone. I'm actually, genuinely curious.

Seriously, simply setting tee times doesn’t equal a well-run tournament. Staffing, scheduling, cart prep, score card prep (dots already added for each player), rule sheets, pin placement sheet. Everything ready from the range with extra, new balls, large coolers filled with soft drinks and water spread out on the course (depending on the tournament). Chris on the mic going over rules and giving 15 and 5 minute warnings for those getting ready. Daniel working the day money, working with Scott in the kitchen if needed. Cody handling the pro shop and any last minute changes. If it’s not a shotgun, either Chris or Daniel will be at the first tee announcing players as they go off.
And that’s all before anyone hits a shot and I know I’ve missed some things. There are even more challenges as so many people come in and finish.
If you are truly curious, you need to just sign up and see for yourself. I promise you’ll enjoy it and get a sense of what everyone is saying.

I've never been part of a tournament that did this. Who is there to hear the announcements? I don't imagine that there are fans to watch a simple local tournament right?
Either way, it would add to my already anxious state

Usually just the next group to get ready. In those cases, that’s where they go over the rules and handout the tee gifts and score cards. I remember this being done at the club championship. It’s certainly not a thing for every tournament. After what the Zurich did this year, I requested letting players have walk-up music. Fingers crossed!

This first thing I notice is that you get a $100 gift card to the clubhouse or they have Titleist/FootJoy come in and set up a small shop. That sort of knocks the $250 a person down to $150.
You get fed a well rounded meal both days. In BREC tournaments you get a bad hamburger on just one day. Some other tournaments you get sandwiches one day and a good meal the other.
You get a free practice round. So now it's 3 rounds for $150 (if you take out the $100 gift card).
I have played with them in the past and received a box of ProV1's or ProV1x's, my choice, as a tee gift. Gifts have also included towels and socks in the past. These are separate from the gift card.
The tournament runs smoothly and they use different formats throughout they year to change it up (match play, 4 Ball, scrambles, etc).
The range is ready when you show up (I've played tournaments before that charged for range balls).
You have chances to win day money, or win money back in your flight. I haven't noticed their calcutta before. But those are always fun.
