re: I’m skeptical that auto stop / start on automobiles is a great feature for saving fuel

You would be amazed at the amount of computer management that allows this to happen and actually makes it way more efficient than you think it does. The computer can fire off the very 1st cylinder on the very 1st crank because TPS and all the other sensors that are built into that system it's not as badge as you think

I think big V8 engines will have like a 3k tax on them in the near future
Pretty sure there is a gas guzzler tax in CA
I remember looking at a Mercedes SLR over there a few years ago and there was some sort of gas guzzler tax that was several thousand. I'd imagine that was because it was a 500K car though.

I'm sure it is impressive.
It still takes a bit of time (very slight) for it to kick in and it still puts extra wear on electrical components (that AC is running on something).
It has no place on a performance car.

This feature has to be annoying as shite when in traffic on the bridge

Emissions control is what I was told. Bought a Chevy last year rather than a Buick because Chevy didn't has this feature yet Buick was nicer car but the hesitation although slight drove me nuts. Edited typo

My wife’s car has this. You can override it but every time you start the car. This feature is Pita.

I've wondered what it does to an engine and can't imagine it's anything good. I believe that you can turn the function off though
Hybrids have been doing this kind of operation for over a decade and don't have issues.

You can have them coded to turn that feature off as the default

The delay is noticeable on some models and annoying. I prefer my 6 speed stick which gets better mpg.

2- My hunch is this setup is harder on engine components, particularly starter motors. If that is correct how much more fuel will we burn manufacturing more replacement parts, packaging them, and shipping them than we do now?
While I do think you are saving some gas... I have always read that 90% of your engine wear happens in the 1st 30 seconds of starting your car... If that is true then I think I would rather keep the motor running....

It's not the same as a cold start. It's much quicker. I'm not sure about the wear and tear though.

The
To be fair, Ford SUPPOSEDLY beefed up the battery/starter/driveshaft/etc to compensate for it
Do I believe them? Ehhh...
Independent studies have been done that claim it saves roughly 10% in fuel mileage depending on how often you stop of course
Personally, I think that's horseshite

Curious how this feature affects batteries in cold weather environments.

I've had mine for a year with no issues. Not exactly a long sample size. I'll occasionally turn it off but most of the time I barely notice it.

quote:Tell me more. I have a 16 F-150 and hate this feature. I've since grown in the habit of pressing the button to turn it off as soon as I start the truck. But I was wondering if there was a permanent fix to it that didn't involve taking your dashboard loose and fricking with the jumpers.
Luckily you can buy an attachment to hook the truck up to your laptop and reprogram the auto stop off as default.

Even cars like the AMG GTR have it which is completely stupid.
It has to do with CAFE standards that get worse each year. It's also why someday we'll only have 3 and 4 cylinder engines.
I had hope that Trump would lessen this shite.

I have a 17 F150 with it and functionally there really aren't any issues with it. It isn't like a normal cranking of the engine, it's much quicker and gentler and happens very, very quickly
Idk about wear and tear but functionally it's not an issue at all

Correct. It saves basically no fuel over the life of the car. It does cut down big time on idle emission
