The homerun race between Mcgwire and Sosa has a lot of eyeballs on it.

The NBA was primarily dominated by bigs until MJ came around

Bigs like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird and Dr J who won 7 of the 10 regular season MVP awards in the 80's?
Or Bigs like Magic , Bird , Isiah Thomas/ Dumars ,etc....and whose teams won nearly every NBA Finals in the 80's?

Or Bigs that primarily won the NBA Finals MVP beginning in 1979( except 83 & 85)?

79- Denis Johnson
80- Magic
81-Maxwell
82-Magic
84-Bird
86- Bird
87- Magic
88- Worthy
89-Dumars
90-Isiah Thomas

I know you all like to fellate MJ ,but give me a break.

Without a doubt, Pistol Pete could fire up a crowd better than anyone.

I don’t think there’s ever been an athlete that has meant more for their sport than Tiger Woods.

I agree for the most part with what you are saying sarcastically, but Magic was 6'9" and played center quite often during his rookie season.

Magic changed the guard position forever with his size and athleticism.

Although it seems to be the minority opinion, I agree with you.

People absolutely love TW. It is astonishing. Even with all the injuries, personal issues, and poor play--the fans can't get enough.

I was watching yesterday and would glance up at the TV to see a ball land a few feet from the pin and could immediately tell who hit the shot just by hearing the roar of the crowd. They follow him around the course like a herd of cattle.

Also, I pulled up my ESPN app earlier and clicked on the PGA championship link--every single article was about TW, not one headline about Koepka (leader heading into Sunday)

Tiger had the dominance of Shaq, the marketing appeal of MJ, and the provocative aura of Ali.

At their peak in 2013, Nike Golf did $792 million in sales. Literally, the depth of the Great Recession, courses and equipment makers folding by the dozens and a company with basically zero rep and zero history in the industry was the 3rd largest golf retailer purely on the back of TW.

If Tiger had stayed dominant, I wonder if Nike would have been able to keep their golf dept profitable.

He jumped center in that close out game ( Kareem injured) ,but Magic playing center is a bit exaggerated.

I was just pointing out that perimeter players were dominating before MJ came around. The dominance in Regular season MVPs ( Magic/ Bird/ Dr J) and Finals MVP is a great example. I'm certain the new 3 point line implementation in 79/80 helped to change the game more in favor of perimeter players.

I’d say Babe Ruth and Muhammad Ali are top tier.

The next tier are athletes like Michael Jordan, Jack Dempsey, Mickey Mantle, Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, and Bjorn Borg.

It’s diificult to include Olympians because they are only relevant every 4 years or so, but guys like Jesse Owens, Bruce Jenner, and Michael Phelps have had outrageous celebrity-like media coverage during their careers.

Good answer.

43-year-old George Blanda's run in 1970 with the Oakland Raiders had the NFL buzzing. But it was just five weeks in a season with no internet, social media or ESPN. Still it was enough to earn Blanda the Bert Bell Award that season.

O.J. Simpson's murder trial put plenty of folks in a frenzy.
