Fairly small city? Metro over 1 million.

You will unfortunately be very close to Clemson

I am pretty well traveled and I can't imagine calling anywhere else home. This is the biggest, little town you can find. We've been here now for 14 years and it is an incredible place to raise a family and as it continues to boom enjoy it even more.
__________
More detail if interested:
I don't know what industry you're in but right now economy is incredible, low cost of living, typically lowest gas prices in country, known for purest tap water in country (yes you can actually look this up, has been ranked #1 in nation), incredibly diversified marketplace, great location: 45 mins to Asheville, 3 hours to charleston, 2 hours to atlanta, 1.5 hours to charlotte, tons of hiking nearby, waterfalls, camping, only downside is housing market is exploding and prices are on the rise.
Greenville hosts BMW largest north american factory, Michilen north american HQ, GE's largest gas turbine manufacturing plant, has recently been named on par with Boston for Tech Start Ups (LINK ), a top 10 in the US downtown Main St, a University that's been named one of the ten most beautiful campuses in the U.S., Minor league baseball (replica of Fenway), minor league soccer, minor league hockey, close to great college football (clemson and usc) has a 16,000 person arena in downtown that hosts major nation wide events, and the elegant peace center that host everything from Republican National Convention to plays to comedies (Martin Short and Steve Martin have a stand up comedy on netflix right now that was filmed there).
Good luck, happy to help however I can.

I lived there and spend most my weekends in Asheville. The downtown is charming but the folks who lived there were a little odd. Don’t get caught up the the Bob Jones weirdos and you’ll like it.
If I were to start a family there I would live in Travlers Rest.

Only moved away because of aging parents. Simpsonville is an awesome place to raise a family. The airport has been expanding, and I never had a problem with rates. Not once did it pay for me to drive to Atl or Charlotte. It's at the top of my list for going back as a retirement destination. I miss it every day, and have lived in a variety of locations (8 states).

Charleston is the only town I would retire in before Greenville. And they are both in SC
Charleston has a lot of growth issues that are only getting worse.
Greenville is the more attractive place in my opinion.

Agree with this entirely. Charleston is better to visit for the weekend (like you could easily in 3 hours if you lived in Greenville) unless you have serious cash to live here.

I am moving here when I retire. Lived there from 1998-2008. It was nice then, it is incredible now.
Get's all the typical concert tours, amazing performing arts theater. Downtown baseball stadium that is a replica of Fenway Park. Southwest airlines.
The downtown area has gotten so popular that real estate there is expensive, but you can get a decent place in the nearby suburbs for 120 dollars a square foot.
Decent food town. Not Louisiana, but decent.
If you can't find a job there, you aren't trying very hard.

Some of our really good friends live there so we go up there quite often as it's only a hour and a half drive from us(Athens).
I really enjoy it, and as a lot of other people have mentioned it's got a lot to offer. The downtown area is fantastic, a good mix of restaurants, bars, shops, as well as some family friendly options. Falls park is right beside downtown and is a great place to take the family, plus they have a lot of events there.
Traveling on 85 and the adjacent roads can suck, especially as they are doing a lot of construction as the growth is Greenville inst keeps exploding. However besides peak rush times traffic is not really too bad.
You have great access to hiking trails, as well as you're very close to Lake Keowee and Hartwell.
I think you will love it, it's a great place to live.

Great mid-sized city. If you like the outdoors, there aren't many better options for a city that size on the east coast. If you or the wife are wine fans, there are some great small vineyards within an hours drive in the Tryon/Saluda, NC area. Not to mention the craft beer scene in Asheville is also a quick drive away.
Hell I'd move there just for the proximity of several great white water rivers.

Access to mountains and lakes is very close -economy seems to be going strong there, especially in the auto biz -very nice little downtown -big cities are a reasonable drive as are great long weekend spots like Asheville and Charleston -can easily hit Clemson or S. Carolina for a college football fix
Airport is expanding, but Charlotte is 1 1/2 hrs away, Atlanta 2 hrs away.
Been here for 22 years now after moving from ATL.
Love it...big town stuff to do with a small town feel.
Downtown is great on the weekends, plenty of outdoor things to do all within a half hour or so drive.
