The only proven side effects are dementia, diabetes, cataracts, prostate cancer, depression, anxiety, and yes leg pain. Also many studies show no reduce in mortality rate. FYI statins are the #1 prescribed medication, and 29 billion dollars worth of statins are sold every year.

The overwhelming majority of people tolerate them without any of these complications, and all the complications are dose dependent. Unless you have known cardiovascular disease, you are not likely to be on the highest doses. At the standard 10-20 mg of Lipitor side effects beyond transient muscle pain are very, very uncommon, and those who need higher doses have such a dramatic statistical benefit it far outweighs the risk.

Unless the OP has diabetes, it is likely his LDL was >190 and that was the indication for starting the statin. Depending on who you have the debate with, some recommend 35 and some 40 as the age for statin initiation if you meet the indications.

All-cause mortality

The cardiovascular mortality reduction is undeniable and one of the most well established premises in all of medicine.
