Speaking as someone who has been in this position, it is a sacrifice. Yes, I knew what I signed up for and when I re-enlisted. It is still hard leaving your kids and loved ones.

I sacrificed two years with my kids. That’s like reverse dog years. My son was two when I left and four when I returned.

I was lucky to be in a situation where I could call home almost every day.

ETA
One anecdote I’d like to share was when I called my wife and she was at my daughter’s ball game. We only had ten minutes so she shuffled the phone to my girl who was in the dug out.

What I found out later (because I made it home in time for her banquet) was they actually held the game up for several minutes so she could talk to me. When she got up to bat, she proclaimed “ I’m going to get a hit for my daddy!”

And she did. And my wife said people were crying.

Anyway...that’s all I have to say about that.

first daughter was 2 months old before I held her..I took leave the entire month of her due date and she was late..

My kids do that when I’m gone a week. Gets me every time.
